heng44 | With the end of the Space Shuttle program approaching, I selected a series of photos showing two orbiters in one shot. I will post these in the coming weeks. Atlantis rolls past Discovery on the way to the OPF at the Kennedy Space Center. The photo was taken on April 10, 1986, as NASA was recovering from the Challenger disaster. Discovery would eventually fly the Return-to-Flight mission STS-26, while Atlantis was assigned to STS-27. Ed Hengeveld |
APG85 | Great picture. Not too often you see two shuttles together... |
OV-105 | Back when they had to do the "shuttle shuffle" all the time. Three shuttles only two OPF's and the OMMF was still being built which would be turned into OPF 3. |
Greggy_D | Look how white and clean they are! |

Well Atlantis had only flown two flights at the time and Discovery had flown 6 flights. |
328KF | I would think that with Atlantis remaining at KSC and Endeavour waiting for a facility to be built in L.A., we might eventually see a "family photo" of the three remaining orbiters before Discovery is flown to NASM. |
Rob Joyner | Awww! I love baby pictures! |
APG85 | Unfortunately, NASA has said no to the "family of Shuttle" picture. All three vehicles are going to be in a varied state of dis-assembly in preparation for public display and the time-line to get them all put together for a picture isn't going to work out. They also don't have the budget for any extra things like a tow out and pictures apparently... |
RichieB16 | Great photo! Is a high res version out there somewhere? |
Fra Mauro | To quote the Genesis song Driving the Last Spike, "They will never see the likes of us again." I don't believe that NASA doesn't have $$$ to take a photo. More likely it wasn't wanted. |
Robert Pearlman | You are of course, welcome to believe whatever you please, but rolling out shuttles is not like backing your car out of the garage; it takes a small army of people many hours of work — and that's just for one orbiter. It is not an inexpensive proposition. |
Hart Sastrowardoyo | This one's of Atlantis and Discovery... We've seen Columbia and Enterprise as well as of Columbia and Challenger, and Atlantis and Endeavour on adjacent launch pads. Any of Challenger and Enterprise, or of Endeavour and Discovery? Or maybe Columbia and Endeavour? |
APG85 | I would think there is potential to see Enterprise and Discovery together during the switch-over at the Hazy Center... if they choose to swap shuttles at the same time... |
OV-105 | There is a photo of Columbia and Endeavour. |
heng44 | Patience! That one will follow in this series |
astro-nut | If my memory serves me correct? I believe during STS-61A, that Space Shuttle Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis were at the Kennedy Space Center all at one time? Now that would of have been a group photo/family portrait! |

Neat picture of the two together...Editor's note: Threads merged. |
