heng44 | Astronauts John Young (right) and Bob Crippen are performing a test on the flightdeck of the Space Shuttle Columbia, which at the time was in the Orbiter Processing Facility at KSC undergoing preparations for STS-1. Ed Hengeveld |
lm5eagle | John Young proving he can smile (occasionally). It's a nice photo Ed. In fact, I wish I had seen it prior to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's mail-in signing for Bob Crippen. |
Greggy_D | What a great picture! Ed, do you have the date this pic was taken? |

Yes, October 1, 1980.
|
ilbasso | In these days when seven-person crews are the norm, it's hard to believe we flew the Shuttle with only two people on board! Those were two brave fellows...and when you read the stories of the near-disastrous things that happened on STS-1, you appreciate even more how brave they were. |
StarDome | Great pics Ed as always. How about giving us a link each week to a hi-res version of each of the pics you post? |
heng44 | The pictures you see are posted in a Photobucket-account, where they are automatically downsized... |
Philip | Great ot see an image of the preparation of STS-1, and this year STS missions will become a thing of the past... |
StarDome | Thanks Ed, no way of posting them a different way then? Or linking to the hi-res version? |
apolloprojeckt | Yes very nice picture, I hope that NASA the last shuttle flight launch on 12-04-2011. Exactly one period of 30 years, NASA would brighten if they would do that... |

Buy the cd/dvd! |
RichieB16 | I love this photo. Does anyone know if it is available on one of NASA's sites in high resolution? |
Apollo Redux | Nice one. John Young the professional astronaut. Excellent. |

I have every one of the discs that have been produced so far for all programmes, and this image was not on my STS-1 Disc. There had been an update of over 400 images to that STS-1 disc since I first bought mine, and this one was an update. New and updated disc on it's way soon. |
heng44 | I must admit that this particular image is not on the updated disc, as I edited out two techs standing in the background. The version without the technicians that I used for that purpose has Young and Crippen without helmets on. |
StarDome | So can you email me a full scan so I can add it to my STS-1 disc please. Any more like it too? |
heng44 | Will do, Andy. No, this was the only one... |
StarDome | Thanks Ed, very kind of you. |
