heng44 | Forty years ago this week, the Apollo 11 crew was in the middle of altitude chamber tests for their spacecraft at the Kennedy Space Center. Here backup commander Jim Lovell is entering the command module under the watchful eye of ‘pad leader’ Guenter Wendt (in yellow). Ed Hengeveld |
carmelo | Any official photo of Apollo 11 back crew? |
heng44 | Never seen one... |
ejectr | That looks like Joe Schmitt in back of Guenter. |

I thought it might be Buzz Aldrin.... ------------------ Dave, NAR # 21853 SR. Challenger 498 Section NAR Advisor |
heng44 | No, it is indeed suit tech Joe Schmitt. |
robsouth | An Apollo 11 backup crew photo could look like this, |
ejectr | WOW! There's a story that could be told right there.
|
heng44 | Or how about this? |

rjurek349 | Awesome original pic, Ed -- and the others: very creative. This is turning into a very creative and fun thread. Any more suggestions? If I had an ounce of creativity in my blood, I'd give it a shot, too. But I am enjoying watching these new versions. |
heng44 | Thanks Rich. Now that I look at the 'night' photo on a different computer, I see that the black sky around Haise's head isn't even. It is on my monitor at home... |
Ken Havekotte | Ed -- The night version is an original, correct? I have a series of similar 8x10s from the Broadway collection of the backup crew posed with the Saturn at Pad 39A. I think there were about 2-4 different versions. If need be, I can recheck them. |
heng44 | Ken, the night-version is ALMOST an original. I have about 8-10 shots of the Apollo 8 prime and backups crews posing with the Saturn 5. All I did was paste Haise into the spot where Borman was standing. He was actually kneeling with Armstrong and Aldrin in this view. |

This is strange, no? Apollo 11 was THE MISSION.
|
heng44 | I am sure that somewhere in the archives there are informal training photos of the three, but so far I haven't seen them yet. |
golddog | Those are great fun photos and I enjoyed looking at them. To make them even more realistic, in the suited photo Lovell should be wearing an EVA suit and not the CMP suit. I think Haise was the BCMP for A11, but if not either he or Anders should be wearing the intravehicular suit with the single side of connectors like Lovell. I hope you can find a real one to post too. |

NASA has a few on in the Apollo Image Gallery: 1 | 2 | 3 There are a few other groupings, mostly during outdoor Geology Training. |
