heng44 | Space Shuttle Columbia arrives back at KSC on November 25, 1981, after a two-day cross-country flight from Edwards AFB in California, where it landed at the end of the STS-2 mission. The 747 carrying Columbia was escorted by Deke Slayton in a T-38, seen in the foreground. Ed Hengeveld |
garymilgrom | Great juxtaposition of technology Ed - the two jets, the spacecraft and the simple but essential mate / demate facility in the background. |
Delta7 | As well as one of the Original 7 Mercury astronauts. I find that aspect pretty neat as well! |

OV-105 | Ted would never be in a shirt like that. |
Tom | Quick question... anytime T-38's were shown flying into KSC, there were always 2 crew members. Is it unusual to have only one pilot aboard? |

I am not sure if Deke Slayton flew this flight solo or not. Im am speculating that perhaps he had enough of flying with a co-pilot when he was on limited flight status. |
Max Q | Can I ask why it took 2 days America's not that big or did it require an extended stop over for some reason. I guess the fuel consumption would be up a tad with the space truck on its back. |

Probably had to set down for weather. Can't fly the shuttle through rain. |
heng44 | The SCA carrying Columbia departed Edwards at 2:28 PST on November 24 and landed at Bergstrom AFB near Austin, Texas, for an overnight refueling stop. The orbiter reached KSC on November 25 at 1:19 EST. On arrival it was designated STS-3. |

"So Deke I met this totally groovy chick last night and she took me to her place so thats why I look like I'm going out to disco....." |
Steve Procter | "No Deke, you're not riding in the back dressed like THAT..." "And get a haircut!" |
Delta7 | "No, when I said have Stafford meet me on the ramp, I meant TOM, not Jim!" |
E2M Lem Man | Didn't everyone have a shirt like that in those days? I remember that I met Deke here in California once... and he had a shirt like that guys! |
Apollo Redux | I remember seeing 'Enterprise's piggy-back flyover, of Montreal, like it was yesterday. Man, where has the time gone? |
328KF | Watching the STS-2 disc from Spacecraft Films, it shows NASA TV coverage of this arrival back at KSC. Deke did a spectacular low level (really low!) fly-by opposite the landing direction with a steep pull-up at the end of the runway. Does anyone one know if there were any photos captured when he did that? |
astro-nut | Another great photo Ed, Thanks for sharing!! Does anyone know who the pilots were for the 747/SCA? |
