She was responsible for both the initial, rejected design, and the final, approved design. I've incorporated this information into the <A HREF="http://genedorr.com/patches/Apollo/ApSo.html" TARGET=_blank>ASTP page</A> on my Space Patches site. I've also updated the rendering of the initial design, based on information supplied by Pinataro. It seems that Jerry Elmore, who was previously identified as the designer of this patch, only did some touch-up work on Pinataro's design prior to it's official release.</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#333333"><TD valign=top>Robert Pearlman</TD><TD>Very interesting, Gene. While attending Spacefest <strike>last</strike> this year, I met a gentleman who shared a letter he received when he was a kid from the U.S. members of the ASTP crew thanking him for his design for that patch and stating they were using elements from his art in their final version. Unfortunately, I've misplaced that person's contact information. If he is reading, or if someone else who met him knows to whom I refer, perhaps he can help with what role his art played in Jean Pinataro's design (if any).</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#494949"><TD valign=top>edorr</TD><TD>I expect that was probably the fellow mentioned at the bottom of Jacques van Oene's <A HREF="http://spacepatches.nl/astp/astp.html" TARGET=_blank>ASTP page</A>. I leave it to you to judge how influential that design was to the final patch.</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#333333"><TD valign=top>Robert Pearlman</TD><TD>Indeed, that does appear to be the same letter and Mr. Begnaud appears to be the same gentleman based on the newspaper clipping's photo.I hadn't seen his design before now, so again, interesting. </TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#494949"><TD valign=top>Kevin T. Randall</TD><TD>AB Emblem in conjunction with Chris Spain (spaced out) has today released a full size 4" replica of the <A HREF="https://space.abemblem.com/collections/apollo/products/apollo-soyuz-test-project-1" TARGET=_blank>original ASTP crew patch</A> designed by Jean Pinataro.The patch comes sealed in a display card like the ones the ten Gene Dorr replica Gemini crew patches are in, and the Apollo (2TV-1, LTA 8, LM-1/Apollo 5, LM-3, 7, 9 and MSC T-38) replica patches Chris Spain recently produced with AB Emblem.The SKU patch design number for this replica ASTP crew patch is 429118. The date codes are now confirmed. He adapted the original design to make it work as an embroidered version and I helped taken it through the development stage with AB Emblem, trying to ensure as much as possible that it has the look of a vintage patch (avoiding the complex fill pattern commonly used in modern patches).The patch is sold with a display card that follows the pattern originally used for AB's Gene Dorr Gemini replicas and continued with the more recent replica projects they have done with me.I actually just got my physical sample patch today and although I may be biased I have to say I love this patch, and have to agree with the crew's original choice of this design.</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#494949"><TD valign=top>edorr</TD><TD>I wanted to celebrate the design that Jean Pinataro created, mainly because this is the design that the American ASTP crew chose from a large field of submissions, and persisted in championing despite dissent from NASA headquarters. Also, as Chris says this really does make a very attractive patch.In the course of doing this project I was saddened to discover that Pinataro had died in December of 2019. This was a blow to me because, despite never having met her, we had become rather close over several years of correspondence. It was also a huge disappointment because I had really wanted her to see her creation as it might have been.At the risk of seeming self-promotional, I urge anyone interested in the story of this design to read the story of it at my <a href="http://patches.genedorr.com/Apollo/ApSo.html" target="AirLock">ASTP page</a>.
