If so, can you share a picture?I recently got a worm logo patch on eBay but I am not sure if it is the same as the one sold back then. I have seen a picture of the Lion Brothers worm patch, but not of an early AB Emblem version.</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#333333"><TD valign=top>Kevin T. They show up prominently on the STS-8 crew photo. </TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#494949"><TD valign=top>328KF</TD><TD>The original NASA worm patches had rounded edges and a "ribbed" stitching in the white area. This is an example from Guy Bluford's in-flight shirt:<center><img src="http://www.collectspace.com/review/328kf/nasa_worm_patch01.jpg" width="280" height="207"></center>On the blue background/white NASA worm, I did some research and I think this is where they came from. The white lettering in this version is substantially larger than the standard NASA sleeve patch, and was seen on the blue flight suits up to roughly STS-8:<center><img src="http://www.collectspace.com/review/328kf/nasa_worm_blue_patch01.jpg" width="281" height="219"><img src="http://www.collectspace.com/review/328kf/nasa_worm_blue_patch02.jpg" width="400" height="236"></center>These do not have the rounded edges and a larger total size than the standard NASA period patch.Not too long ago, one of the NASA suit techs/closeout crew members had some items in a Goldberg auction, which made me remember that back in the '80s, the white room guys had blue NASA worms on the back of their coveralls. Here is one of those patches from the auction:<center><img src="http://www.collectspace.com/review/328kf/nasa_worm_blue_patch03.jpg" width="368" height="285"></center> This back patch appears to me to be the same stitching and color as the astronaut flight suit patch. I think what they did was took these larger patches, trimmed them down, and put an edging around them to apply to the flight suits.There may have been some additional uncut patches offered in this auction or another recent one, if memory serves. Unfortunately, I was not able to locate any screen captures or still photos of the closeout crew showing these back patches, but they were quite common in those days.</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#333333"><TD valign=top>Bull_Eckert</TD><TD>NASA astronauts also wore the worm patch in its square version (no rounded edges) as seen on many portraits from 1978.The patch appears to be fully embroidered, and the "S" in it is slightly different from the original artwork. Was an official insignia for shuttle pilots?Editor's note: Threads merged.</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#494949"><TD valign=top>spaced out</TD><TD>I've just uploaded an update to the NASA Insignia page of my <A HREF="http://www.crewpatches.com" TARGET=_blank>Crew Patches website</A> which attempts to briefly cover the NASA "worm" logoytpe patches used for the early Shuttle program (to STS-51L).As mentioned above there appear to be at least three embroidered versions of the design that were worn by astronauts in the early days of the program. For me the definitive design is really the one worn on the flight suits from STS-1 onwards but the white-on-blue version also needs to be mentioned along with the red on white square-cornered patch worn in some 1978 portrait photos.I don't have any really good images of the white-on-blue patch so if anyone has an example or has better photos I could use please do send them to me. Likewise the red on white patch - there are quite a few poor versions of this around but if someone has a vintage example that really matches the 1978 version (which was itself a pretty scrappy patch) that would be great to see.</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#333333"><TD valign=top>mach3valkyrie</TD><TD>There's also a gold on white version that has come up in the past. I have both NASA and personal photos of the guys wearing the "worm" from that period. So it dates back to at least 1977.</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#333333"><TD valign=top>Kevin T. Randall</TD><TD>AB Emblem have just released a reproduction of the "blue" NASA Worm patch as used during the Approach and Landing Tests. They can also be seen in photos of the Group 8 astronauts in 1978, and in the official crew photos of STS-8, (these photo's can be seen above).
