LM-12 | From the images I have seen, there were 16 photos taken by Jim McDivitt of the Gemini 4 EVA by Ed White. The "March to the Moon" Gemini 4 gallery has the images, but I don't think the photos are shown in the sequence they were taken. At the bottom of each frame, you can see the beginning of the next frame. By finding the matching photo, you come up with a different sequence. Here is the order the photos are shown in the gallery, with the sequence I think they were taken in brackets. Do you agree? - S65-30427 (3)
- S65-30428 (7)
- S65-30429 (14)
- S65-30430 (4)
- S65-30431 (1)
- S65-30432 (15)
- S65-30433A (6)
- S65-30433 (5)
- S65-34634 (2)
- S65-34636 (8)
- S65-34637 (9)
- S65-34638 (10)
- S65-34639 (11)
- S65-34640 (12)
- S65-34641 (13)
- S65-34642 (16)

LM-12 | I think all the above EVA photos are on one film magazine (Magazine 16), but the photo number designations S65-304xx and S65-346xx are confusing. |
nasamad | The NASA S Series photo designation numbers are purely the order in which the press office released selections of the images to the wider world. This is the reason Ed Hengeveld's Apollo crews painting is assigned an S95 number, the numbers are a designation of release year then print (now digital) release Sxx-xxxxx. |
LM-12 | So S65-30427 was the first Gemini 4 EVA photo released, but S65-30431 was actually the first EVA photo that McDivitt took.
|
LM-12 | There is a missing number in the EVA photo sequence. Does photo S65-34635 not exist? I don't see that frame in any Gemini 4 galleries, and those galleries include blank images. |
LM-12 | I think I see the problem: S65-30433A and S65-34635 are the same photo.
|
LM-12 | More confusion about the photo numbers: in some Gemini magazines, the photo number sequence is the reverse of the order in which the images were taken. For example, the photos in Gemini 4 Magazine 7 are numbered S65-34726 to S65-34776, but 34776 is frame 1 and 34726 is frame 54. |
LM-12 | NASA SP-129 has these frame numbers for the EVA photos of Ed White on Magazine 16: - S65-30431 ... frame 5 ... 65-HC-362
- S65-34634 ... frame 6
- S65-30427 ... frame 7 ... 65-HC-361
- S65-30430 ... frame 8 ... 65-HC-360
- S65-30433 ... frame 9 ... 65-HC-359
- S65-????? ... frame 10
- S65-30428 ... frame 11 ... 65-HC-363
- S65-34636 ... frame 12
- S65-34637 ... frame 13
- S65-34638 ... frame 14
- S65-34639 ... frame 15
- S65-34640 ... frame 16
- S65-34641 ... frame 17
- S65-30429 ... frame 18 ... 65-HC-364
- S65-30432 ... frame 19 ... 65-HC-365
- S65-34642 ... frame 20
There is no photo number shown for frame 10, but S65-30433A (aka S65-34635) seems like the logical image. Not sure why "S65-34635" is not in the book as frame 10.
|
LM-12 | Those EVA photos were taken from 1945 GMT to 2000 GMT on June 3, 1965.
|
LM-12 | I have added some 65-HC-xxx numbers to the previous list. The missing numbers might be 65-HC-37x. |
LM-12 | For comparison, the S66 numbers are in sequence for the Gemini 9A EVA photos of Gene Cernan on Magazine G: - S66-38510 ... frame 1
- S66-38511 ... frame 2
- S66-38512 ... frame 3
- S66-38513 ... frame 4
- S66-38514 ... frame 5
- S66-38515 ... frame 6
- S66-38516 ... frame 7
- S66-38517 ... frame 8
- S66-38518 ... frame 9
|
LM-12 | Something else out of sequence: On Gemini 6A, these photos of Gemini 7 (S65-63163 to S65-63224) were taken before these photos of Gemini 7 (S65-63101 to S65-63127). |

Which number is at top left on the official NASA photo? |
LM-12 | It looks like photo S65-30427 (frame 7) was taken shortly after White kicked off the nose of the Gemini 4 spacecraft with his right foot. |
nasamad | I have made some pages on my website listing the JSC S series photo numbers for the Gemini mission images, it list the colour print and B&W print numbers in order. I've had to split the list into mission pages as by the time you get to the later missions (exception being 8) the list are quite large. The list are at the bottom of the menu. |
LM-12 | The first EVA photo of Ed White is frame 5 (S65-30431) on Magazine 16. Would rotating the image 90 degrees to the right be the correct orientation, with frame 6 to the left instead of the bottom? |
heng44 | I have worked with a lot of scanned 70mm negative strips and they run from bottom to top. |
LM-12 | I'm no camera expert, but my thinking is that if the roll of film inside the camera moves from left to right, then the next frame would be on the left. |
heng44 | In a Hasselblad camera the film runs from bottom to top. |
LM-12 | Okay Ed, I almost get it. But this confuses me: in the Hasselblad Gemini 4 film strip, the next frame in the sequence is below. The top of frame 6 is seen below frame 5. So, top to bottom it looks like. In the Hasselblad Apollo 11 film strip, the next frame in the sequence is above. So, bottom to top, like you said. |

Regarding Gemini 4, the March to the Moon site also has photos S65-36153 and S65-36154. Do any photos that White took have S65 numbers? |
