T O P I C R E V I E WASCAN1984If you had the entire roster of astronauts eligible to fly Apollo missions and you could make any crews up the way you want. Who would you select for the Apollo missions 7 - 17. E.G. I would have Apollo 11 flown by Pete Conrad CDR, Gene Cernan LMP and John young CMP.ejectrJust like the Beatles.....WAY too much talent in one place in that line up!spaced outIf you can ignore the realities of people leaving NASA and all the internal politics I'd have the moon landing crew commanded by Scott Carpenter with Jim McDivitt as LMP and Mike Collins as CMP. No real justification... just that nice people sometimes deserve to be first. Actually, I suppose the Apollo 12 crew also deserve a first place in that race, so I'd have to go for a synchronised dual landing of my Apollo 11 crew and the original Apollo 12 crew followed by a race down the ladders to see who gets to be first on the moon. WAWalshI will have to think about the full crew assignments A7-17 for a bit, though I suspect it will end up involving most of the same men as on the earlier thread. That said, with a little more reflection, I suspect that I would keep Neil Armstrong in the commander's slot for the first landing. The gentleman has handled the fame for 36 years with an amazing display of grace and dignity. To draw a parallel, he has proven to be the Joe DiMaggio of the astronaut corp. As to the second slot, I would tend to agree with Buzz that he would be better off on a later mission. carmeloAP-7-Cooper,Eisle,Cunningham.AP-8-Borman,Mc Divitt,Anders.AP-9-Schirra ,Scott,Schweickart.AP-10-Stafford,lovell,Aldrin.AP-11-Armstrong,Young,Cernan.AP-12-Conrad,Gordon Bean.AP-13-Mc Divitt,Roosa,Mitchell.AP-14-Lovell,Mattingly,Haise.AP-15-Scott,Worden,Lousma.AP-16-Lovell,Weitz,Swigert.AP-17-Young,Worden,Engle(or Schmitt).AP-18-Gordon,Brand,Schmitt.AP-19-Haise,Pogue,Carr.AP-20-Conrad,Lind,Mc Candless.Skylab-2-Cunningham (or Conrad),Kerwin,Musgrave Skylab-3-Schweickart,Gibson,Lenoir(or Brand).Skylab-4-Lovell,Allen,Crippen (or Carr).ASTP-Stafford,Slayton,Bean.[This message has been edited by carmelo (edited July 19, 2005).]Duke Of URLThis thread could get to be like that Dr. Suess book "If I Ran The Circus"!"If I ran the circus, the Circus McGurkus..."I'd drive Slayton and Shepard NUTS.....I'd make them CMP/LMP on a Glenn-commanded, science-oriented landing mission. Glenn would get to crack the whip on Big Al over geology training. But only because De Debbil made me do it, or maybe because I'm a big stinker. All kidding aside, THAT would be a competent and motovated crew.I'd have Wally Schirra back up Scott Carpenter, just so he'd have to listen to Carpenter sing "Yellow Bird" for 18 months before Wally's (early) lunar landing. Carpenter's crew would have Rusty Schwiekert. Talk about a laid-back mission! I'd put Frank Borman in there just to mellow him out. Is it possible to roll joints in space? Does zero G harsh the vibe? ATTN, Col. Borman: it's good for nausea.I'd give Gordo a landing with John Young and Charlie Duke. And you couldn't split up Stafford and Cernan. Would Donn Eisele fit with these two? Maybe I'd have an all "Nice Guy" flight (commanded by Jim Lovell with Michael Collins and Bill Anders) or an "All Anal" (as in rigidity of personality) mission with Dave Scott, Aldrin and Cunningham. And I'd keep Gus Grissom, Roger Chafee and Ed White together. If they survived, Elliot See, Charlie Bassett and CC Williams would fly, too. Then I'd give JAMES BROWN a lunar landing. Bobby Byrd would be his CMP and Maceo Parker LMP.I'd have Wally Schirra back them up too, since he likes listening to guys sing so much.[This message has been edited by Duke Of URL (edited July 22, 2005).]
