T O P I C R E V I E WRobert PearlmancollectSPACE Michelle Williams to portray fallen teacher in space in 'The Challenger'The true-life tragic story of NASA's first teacher-in-space is the focus of a new feature film now in development.Actress Michelle Williams is set to portray Christa McAuliffe, the high school teacher who with her six astronaut crewmates were lost aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1986. Williams was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the 2005 movie "Brokeback Mountain" and is now co-starring in the comic book film "Venom" opening in theaters on Friday (Oct. 5). SpaceAngelWill this movie be in theaters, something like "Apollo 13" and "First Man"? Robert PearlmanIt is being produced as a feature film, so yes, but there is no distributor attached yet and production does not begin until next spring, so we'll have to wait and see.MrSpace86Any word on how her family feels about the movie? How about the other STS-51L family members?Robert PearlmanThere is no word yet from McAuliffe's family, her crewmates' families or what source material or advisors have been consulted.ColinBurgessBack in October last year it was announced that a new movie would begin production around May this year on the life of Christa McAuliffe and the loss of the crew of shuttle Challenger. To be called "The Challenger," the producers announced that Michelle Williams would be playing the role of Christa McAuliffe. Since then, despite occasional online checks, I have seen nothing else or any updates in regard to this movie. Does anyone know if it is actually going into production, and when — if still going ahead — it will be released? Editor's note: Threads merged.ColinBurgessHas anyone heard anything more on this movie? The updated and expanded version of my book "Teacher in Space" will be released early next year and the University of Nebraska Press is anxious to tie it in with the release of the movie. Any news welcomed.
