T O P I C R E V I E WMCroft04I have some NASA memos dating to the mid-1970s that refer to a number of different NASA offices. Often an initial is used along with the office name (sometimes only the initial is used). I've listed some of these below. There are other initials (e.g. CA, CB, AA, CG, CH) used in some of the memo headings that I suspect also refer to NASA offices. Can anyone explain this system? Headquarters Offices of Space Science (S)Space Flight (M)Applications (E)Aeronautics and Space Technology (R)Personnel (Q)General Counsel (G)Planning and Program Integration (O)micropoozWell, the answer, as you would expect in any government endeavor, is complicated. All of the single-letter designations that you noted above were NASA HQ designators in the past (they've all changed in the last 10-15 years). The double-letter designations that you mentioned are likely Johnson Space Center designators. A_ is for the JSC Center Director's Office. C_ is for the Crew Office. D_ is for Mission Ops. E_ is for Engineering. N_ is for Safety and Mission Assurance. And there are several more.Other NASA centers have differing combinations of letters and numbers for their office designations.Clear as mud? MCroft04Thank you very much! That actually makes sense based on the authors of the memos. I'll go back and check the two letter ones but it sure looks like you are correct.Jim BehlingThey are called office symbols. They are used for routing mail and correspondence, as well as budget tracking and personnel actions.MCroft04The JSC memos have a lot of 2 letter initials for distribution. Any chance that someone has a complete list (I know I'm asking a lot)? Thanks for all the help!Jim Behling quote:Originally posted by MCroft04:Any chance that someone has a complete list It depends on the timeframe. Some have changed over the years.Robert PearlmanSee this site for a current list of top level JSC organizations and their mail codes.MCroft04Thanks for the link. I'm interested in the time frame from 1974-79 (when the payload specialist position was being developed). I'll check the link closely to see if I can recognize any similarities to the older memos.
