|KSCartist||Project Mercury 8" Commemorative Patch |
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the formation of NASA. To mark this event artist Tim Gagnon of Titusville, FL has designed a series of emblems commemorating the United States efforts to explore space.
This design, the second in the series honors the men and women of Project Mercury.
The central themes of the design are the emblems that were painted onto the side of the Mercury spacecraft. These emblems were chosen by the astronauts who flew to illustrate their feelings about the program. You will note that "Freedom 7" and "Liberty Bell 7" are below the horizon. This illustrates that these two missions were sub-orbital. The other four missions rise above the Earth's horizon into orbit. The Sun, just beginning to rise highlights the fact that these missions were our first forays into space. The Greek Symbol of the Planet Mercury with the number "7" inside was adopted as the astronaut's symbol for their group. The surnames of the astronauts who flew the missions surround the patch in the border. Donald Slayton's name is in gold to signify his appointment as Chief Astronaut in charge of crew assignments.
The patch is 8" in diameter with a merrowed border. It is not fully embroidered as the area of "space" above earth is black twill. This allows the astronauts artwork to be highlighted in a 3 dimensional effect.
Currently taking pre-orders. If interested, please download and complete the order form and return with payment ($10 ea, U.S. funds only).
I am hoping that Jacques from spacepatches.nl will be able to partner with me again to take care of our friends across the pond that wish to have this patch. If you live outside of North America please contact Jacques with your order.
|KSCartist||Just thought I'd let everyone know that I've ordered the patches from the embroidery company. I should have them in hand by the first week of June.|
Thanks for looking.
|Harald Kraenzel||As Jacques told me that he will not partner this time I would like to ask those in Europe who wants to have these 8" Commemorative Patches?|
I would offer to partner with Tim.
|KSCartist||The patches have arrived. I'm very pleased with how they turned out. I hope everyone who ordered one will be too.|
The first bunch will be mailed out on Saturday or Monday.
|andrewcli||Tim, is it possible to see a scan of your beautiful embroidered patch? Thank you!|
|spkane||Tim, I missed this posting completely. It is obviously too late to pre-order (I figured that out on my own). Do you have any additional inventory for sale? |
|KSCartist||Sure just download the order form and mail it in to me with your check.|
|BMckay||I purchased one in Florida the other day and I concur - It was well made and designed. First rate Tim.. Now everyone go out and buy one!! |
|KSCartist||For those of you who outside of North America and would like to order this patch, you can visit The Space Store. |
Thanks for the compliments. Now do what Bryan said.
|Monksanders||Tim, the pictures do not do justice to this Project Mercury patch. It is beautiful in design and color and very impressive in person. For those of you that have not ordered... just send the check. You will not be sorry. |
I have ordered an extra to give to a teacher friend of mine for her to hang in her elementary school classroom. Since the current textbooks pass over so many of our important achievements in space flight, your patch will be used to fill a gap.
I cannot wait for the others in this series. I will try to be patient and not email you repeatedly about the next arrival.
|Michael Clemente||I received my patch today and I have to agree with everybody else. It is a beautiful patch. You did a great job with the design and I am looking forward for your other patches. |
|Gonzo||Tim - (I know this is an old thread) I just got one of these today at The Goddard VC. It was their last one too. It is truly beautiful. One question though. Does the "Tang" at the bottom above "Mercury" in the black reference what I think it does? I ask because the symbolism as described above doesn't mention it. Nor does it show in your pic above either. Or did I get a fake one?|
|KSCartist||No worries. What you purchased is an authorized AB Emblem version. |
"TANG" is my initials.
