T O P I C R E V I E WmikepfHiMy workplace just happens to be right below the final landing approach to NASA Ames' Moffett Field. I just happened to be walking outside yesterday morning when I heard something really big coming in. As I always do, I stopped to see what it was. Much to my surprise and delight, it was the 747 shuttle transporter! What an awesome sight. While I'm sure it was much higher, it seemed to be just above tree height. It looked HUGE! I wish I could have gotten a picture. In case you live in the area and did not already know, it will be on display at an airshow at Moffett this weekend. A couple of weeks ago I had a similar experience but with a B-17 bomber. I guess it pays to keep looking up. Regards,Mike sts205cdrI'm going down on Saturday for the Air & Space show, can't wait!!!--JohnRodinaAbout a year or so ago, I was looking out my home office window (I live very close to a regional airport) and buzzing right along -- at about 1,000 feet and about 1 mile or so away was a B-24 Liberator. I knew there was one flying, of course, but I didn't know it was in the neighborhood. Pretty cool.RickI was on my way to the race in Dover, Del. last year, driving the beltway around Washington, D.C. when I saw two fighter planes landing at Edwards Air Force Base.OK, no big deal there, really. But then I was literally buzzed by Air Force One, baby!!! Man, that was an awesome sight. The fighters had evidently been escorting Air Force One. That was a treat ...ASTP ExhibitorRick- I think that was Andrews AFB. ------------------John MaccoShady Side, Md.Rodina quote:Originally posted by ASTP Exhibitor:Rick- I think that was Andrews AFB.That's what we pilots call a "Long Final"sts205cdrJust got back from the air show, musta walked 50 miles, but it was worth every step. The best moments for me were spent talking to the STA crew and a pilot stationed in El Paso who usually spends most of his time training Shuttle pilots with the Gulfstream II. NASA Ames had a giant tent set up with numerous interactive exhibits, including hands-on RC rovers and several atmospheric research projects they have going.Needless to say, the aerobatics were breath-taking.All in all, it was a great way to spend a crisp, beautiful California day!--John[This message has been edited by sts205cdr (edited May 29, 2004).]RickEdwards ... Andrews ... what's the difference? About 3,000 miles, that's what. Sorry. But I really DID see Air Force One coming into Andrews. Really. I promise.
