T O P I C R E V I E WRobert PearlmanUPI: Polar bears temporarily evicted from zoo quote:Polar bears Neil and Buzz are being bounced from a St. Paul, Minn., zoo, to temporary quarters in Buffalo, N.Y., while their permanent home gets a makeover. The furry pair, named for Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, won't be back at St. Paul's Como Zoo until 2010. The two bears have been waddling about their small, outdated pool since they arrived six years ago, the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune reported Friday. The pool and its underwater viewing area are getting an upgrade, zoo officials said. The new compound, the Polar Bear Odyssey, will be four times larger, allowing visitors to see the bears exhibit natural behaviors such as digging, swimming, foraging and hunting. The Como Zoo are throwing a party January 19-21 to send off Neil and Buzz. mjanovecIt's *ABOUT TIME* they finally updated their enclosure. It was essentially a concrete floor and walls, with a small pool at the edge that was hardly big enough for both bears to occupy at the same time. Everytime I visited that zoo, I felt really bad for those bears. (Note: this is the first time I've heard of their names, however!)I'm happy to hear they will be getting the home they truly deserve.Robert PearlmanAn update on Neil and Buzz... quote:Two polar bears that the Buffalo Zoo decided not to temporarily house will likely head to the Detroit Zoo.The bears, Neil and Buzz, are currently housed at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota. Administrators there tell 2 On Your Side the bears will likely spend two years in Detroit while their home in Minnesota is renovated. The Buffalo Zoo was prepared to house the bears, but backed out due to cost.Jay Chladek quote:Originally posted by Robert Pearlman:The Buffalo Zoo was prepared to house the bears, but backed out due to cost.It must have been those appearance fees on Neil's behalf and the autograph fees on Buzz's part.
