T O P I C R E V I E WALAINTrying to get the focus on the Neil ARMSTRONG story told by Eddie BRAUN in Robert's Top 10 topic ...Looks like many people had a simular experience, this is => Meeting Dr. Neil ARMSTRONG "Off-events" and talking to him for 20 ... 30 minutes Héy I even read here some even did get an autograph !Anyone same experience ?spaceukIf you do get to talk to him a good topic is chronometers. He is fascinated with them and when he came to England in 1999 went to Harrison's abode where some of the first 'portable' chronometers were constructed a couple hundred years back.I spoke with him briefly but it was a more casual level. At London postflight press briefings,it was technical questions at the US Embassy where it was heldPhillUKNC Apollo FanAs I recall he even is reported to have discussed Harrison's chronometers at dinner with the Queen during the Apollo 11 world tour. As I recall, a toast was made to the US crew and their accomplishment - at which point Neil responded that Harrison's chronometers so many years ago contributed greatly to the eventual success of landing on the moon.I would recommend a book about Harrison for anyone who might have further interest. Written by Dava Sobel, the name of the book is "Longitude - The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time." It is a fascinating read.Sorry, a little of topic for the thread - but perhaps one could consider it an investment if they ever find themselves in the presence of the first man to walk on the moon!JonathanSteve ProcterInteresting stuff, I read the book some time back. This thread has thrown up a couple of co-incidences in that it was a friend of mine who took Neil to Harrison's home back in 1999.Also of course Harrison's arch rival in claiming the cash prize for developing the working ships chronometer was the Rev. NevilMaskelyne who later became Astronomer Royal.Unless I'm mistaken he gives his name to a crater (or craters) on the Sea of Tranquility that would have been used as a marker on the Apollo 11 landing (back to Neil again!)StevePhilipI've read 2 events involving Dr ARMSTRONG on this forum, one was about a flight teward getting an autograph ... another was about a worker requesting an autograph, Neil Armstrong declined but turned back later and gave the autograph anyway ...Are my recollections right ?andrewcarsonI think it was.,A friend who was a Swissair Pilot got an autograph..and the other was a NASA employee who was astonished that when Neil visited he wouldnt sign for him...but eventually Dr armstrong came back ten minutes later examined the photo...then signed the item....Andrew
