Gemini and Mercury Remastered
by Andy Sanders
Embark on a captivating photographic journey beyond Earth, from the dawn of human space exploration, through the untold story of the Mercury and Gemini missions.

When we think of the history of space exploration, we can't help but think of the Apollo missions and Neil Armstrong's one giant leap. But what about the small steps that enabled NASA to reach for the Moon?

Astronauts working on the earliest space missions, from Project Mercury to the Gemini missions of the mid-1960s, answered fundamental questions about the possibilities of long-duration space travel, paving the way for the Apollo missions and, ultimately, the Moon landings. They also took the first, and still some of the finest, images of Earth ever captured on film.

Now, the bestselling author of "Apollo Remastered," Andy Saunders has restored images from these first missions to show them in unprecedented detail and tell their full story, filled with dramatic life or death moments, mischievous pranks and astonishing triumphs. This stunning visual odyssey brings to life the pivotal, intimate moments of early space travel, unveiling the raw beauty and profound challenges faced by the pioneering astronauts pushing the boundaries of human achievement. "Gemini and Mercury Remastered" is a striking tribute to the visionaries who dared to dream beyond our world and a testament to the enduring power of exploration.

'Gemini and Mercury Remastered' brings new clarity to NASA's early spaceflights

As astronomers attest, the deeper you look out into space, the farther back in time you see. As Andy Saunders illustrates, the same can said for astronaut photography.

Saunders, whose previous title "Apollo Remastered" literally changed the way we can see the visual record of the first missions to fly humans to the moon, is now back with "Gemini and Mercury Remastered." This new collection of hundreds of restored photos provides a clearer view of the U.S. programs that made reaching the lunar surface possible.

Having now seen the book, I believe "the untold story" is a reference to how Andy Saunders was able to fill in gaps in the visual record to reconstruct (as much as possible) the full story of each Mercury and Gemini mission.

His work to restore waterlogged film and extract new stills from 16mm footage, along with his remastering of the available photos, now allow us to see moments from launch to landing that previously were either damaged, faded or in dark shadow.

(I trimmed back some of the previous replies to keep the discussion going forward on the book and its content, now that it has been released.)

This book is indeed remarkable. It was so nice to finally see clear images of Scott Carpenter during Aurora's flight. Those Mercury capsules were certainly cramped! Also, the author did a yeoman's job getting good images from Cernan's EVA during Gemini IX.

I was particularly impressed by the clear, four image sequence showing Gemini 8's hasty undocking from the Agena. Sadly, it appears that all four images are mirror reversed as the metal discharge whisker is shown on the left side of the docking collar, not the right side as depicted in earlier images and elsewhere in the book.

This is a great addition to any space oriented library.

It’s a worthwhile book, but I don't care for the poor resolution of the near-grey-on-black photo captions. I also found the use of the poor souvenir patches for GT-3 and GT-4 a bit jarring.

Grissom and Young produced and wore their own patch after the flight and McDivitt approved a patch decades later, based on the contemporary Flightline medallion.

There were three discharge fingers in the docking cone, in the 2 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock positions. However, I do think that some of the Gemini 8 images may be flipped, because they appear to be shot from Armstrong's window, and I assumed (I may be wrong) that Scott's window was used for photography.

I looked through the book at a bookstore and yes, I noticed the use of the cartoon-like patches for GT-3 and -4.

The Fliteline medallions flown on both flights were the basis of the unofficial crew patches; in the case of GT-4 the crew wanted to name their spacecraft 'American Eagle' but NASA put its foot down after the dustup with Grissom over his naming of GT-3. Ironically, the next time names were given to US spacecraft was on Apollo 9 four years later-commanded by McDivitt.

Off to a book signing today by Andy Saunders at Jodrell Bank. There will be at least six collectSPACE members there too (that I know of).

I do prefer the U.S book cover personally, will try and find out why the two versions.

Andy reported that the choice of book cover was mainly down to the publisher with their experience into what attracts a potential buyer in their own marketplace. The U.K. book cover was his personal choice after reviewing the many photo options available.

An exhibition of photos (enlargements from the book) was on display at Jodrell Bank - Gemini and Mercury Remastered Exhibition 6 Sep, 2025 – 4 Jan, 2026. Andy will also be undertaking a book signing/lecture tour too. Full details on the Apollo Remastered website.
