From 1999 to 2003, Thomas Walden, a space autograph dealer, who ran Galaxy Space Autographs of Jupiter, Florida, sent out very tempting autograph sales lists of mostly Apollo astronauts. For example, available for usually very reasonable prices were autographed WSS photos by Buzz Aldrin, Charles Conrad, Alan Shepard, Jim Lovell, Jim McDivitt, etc. Of very special note are his Buzz Aldrin signed WSS portraits, with a spectacular "We came in peace..." inscription. Mr. Walden informed me that he paid the astronauts to sign 100 items for him at a time. He had such a supply that he sold some at a discount when several were offered together. For an amazing example from his 1999 list was the desirable Alan Shepard on the moon litho holding the US flag. He also made available wonderful multi-signed Apollo lunar astronaut "Full Moon" lithos that this post is mainly about. In his 1999 list he offered a NASA full moon litho signed by 12 Apollo lunar astronauts (six moonwalkers and six lunar astronauts). The moonwalkers signing were Conrad, Bean, Shepard, Mitchell, Duke and Schmitt. These "Full Moon" multi-signed lithos were popular with collectors back then and many were used to have additional lunar astronauts to add their autographs to the original 12. I had two more added on mine: Gene Cernan in person and Thomas Mattingly through a friend, so mine has 14. As time went on and more and more astronauts made personal appearances and had paid signings, such as at Novaspace, many of these full moon lithos received additional autographs with reports of some ending up with 17 to 18 lunar astronaut autographs. Young, Collins and Scott all signed at Novaspace, with Aldrin available privately for years, but at a steep price. So any of these "Full Moon" lunar astronaut signed lithos with 16, 17 or 18 autographs would have been quite an achievement, and quite an astronaut autograph record of the 1968-72 Apollo era of lunar exploration. While mine has 14 autographs, the one shown here from another collector has a total of 16. The additional four on his are: Aldrin, Scott, Stafford and Cernan. Mike Collins could have been added later via Novaspace, along with possibly Mattingly elsewhere. For various reasons, none of these Full Moon lithos would have autographs by Armstrong, Anders, Irwin and Swigert, with Ron Evans dying around the time these were produced. It would be of interest to learn if any other collectors have Galaxy "Full Moon" lithos with impressive autograph totals beyond 12. |
