Are there astronauts who have a tattoo?

Not really what you call a tattoo, but John Glenn noted in his book that he, at least, had them tattoo the spots where they attached the biological sensors so that they could get the same spot all the time to corrolate the data. I think I read somewhere that a couple of the others did this, too.

I believe this photo shows Kay Hire with a (temporary?) tattoo on her left-shoulder...

In this photo, a tattoo can be seen on Apollo 12 commander Pete Conrad's left forearm. Does anyone knew what the tattoo was? It kind of looks like the ship (Intrepid?).

The tattoo does look like a sailing ship.

I don't have any knowledge of this, but it could be an anchor. I don't mean to stereotype, but a lot of Navy guys have anchor tattoos.

Courtesy of the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal, the following is a second shot of the tattoo. I fear it does not help much (but part does appear to be an anchor).

The tattoo was an anchor and his intials with a rattle snake head. He had it put on his arm during WWII. He was 15 years old and he wanted to look like a sailor or an adult he was small in stature and looked very young.

Thanks so much. Do you recall or have photos to check to know if the blue anchor was surrounded by stars, with his initials underneath? That is what I read somewhere.

If memory serves me right I believe the anchor was blue and there were stars around it. I know he was not very proud of it and that he did not want any of his children to have tattoos.

I think I remember seeing a USMC tattoo on Jack Lousma's arm, but I could be wrong.

I heard rumors from some friends who work at JSC who were there in the heyday of the STS era that a few astronauts tattooed their names and/or SSNs on various body parts after the Challenger disaster. You can figure out the reasons on your own.

I've always wondered if it was true or not, but I've never had the nerve to ask any shuttle-era astronauts I've talked with about it.

I believe Luca Parmitano has a small one on his chest and in a tennis playing shot of Vladimir Kovalyonok he had a plant/leaves like design on his left forearm.

Here's a post-flight Gemini V September 1965 photo showing Pete Conrad wearing his personal Glycine Airman automatic GMT pilot watch... tattoo visible!

Navy SEAL, medical doctor and NASA astronaut Jonny Kim has a tattoo on his left arm of the SEAL Trident with the Greek symbol of medicine intertwined around it.

On his right arm are the names of friends who died in combat.

Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman was at Space Center Houston today (June 5) to be tattooed with the mission's trajectory.
