Official Closure of The Longhorn Project at Johnson Space Center

Dear Friends of the Longhorn Project:

Thanks to you, for three decades The Longhorn Project at Johnson Space Center has empowered more than 100,000 students through hands-on agriculture and STEM education programs. We are proud of the generations of students we have inspired, and the legacy created through this unique blend of agriculture, longhorns, science, engineering, and space exploration. We know you share that pride and have been an important part of this journey.

After careful consideration, The Longhorn Project Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to close the program at NASA Johnson Space Center. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Longhorn Project has faced significant financial challenges, and capital improvement needs that exceed its limited resources. The Longhorn Project's final day on the grounds of NASA Johnson Space Center will be August 19, 2026, coinciding with the expiration of our current License Agreement. This marks the conclusion of The Longhorn Project, and there are no plans to relocate or reestablish the program elsewhere.

We extend our sincere gratitude to you and to the many sponsors, volunteers, educators, and partners who have generously contributed their time, financial resources, and unwavering commitment to making this program possible. Please know that your support played a vital role in transforming the lives of students throughout the past 30 years.

The beautiful, registered Texas Longhorns that graced our pastures were privately owned by dedicated breeders and have found new homes with event venues, ranch owners, and breeders, where they will continue to be appreciated and enjoyed by future generations. We invite you to follow The Longhorn Project at Johnson Space Center on Facebook for updates on their future homes and ongoing developments.

As we close this chapter, our commitment to honoring the impact and legacy of The Longhorn Project remains steadfast. While this decision marks the end of an important era at NASA Johnson Space Center and in our community, the stories, lessons, relationships, and achievements cultivated over the past 30 years will continue to inspire future generations. We are grateful for the vision of George W.S. Abbey, former Director of NASA Johnson Space Center and founder of The Longhorn Project, whose pioneering leadership remains an enduring source of inspiration and a legacy.
