It is a well known factoid that the Thunderbird characters who piloted the International Rescue craft launched from Tracy Island in the Gerry and Sylvia Anderson TV production were named after the Mercury 7 astronauts.
  • Scott Tracy: Named after Scott Carpenter
  • John Tracy: Named after John Glenn
  • Virgil Tracy: Named after Gus Grissom (whose first name was Virgil)
  • Gordon Tracy: Named after Gordon Cooper
  • Alan Tracy: Named after Alan Shepard
Given that the storyboards and animation filming took place at least a year after the last Mercury mission, I've always wondered about three specific questions:
  1. Why were Deke Slayton and Wally Schirra missed out?
  2. Given the circumstances of Scott Carpenter's flight, why was his name chosen to be 'leader' of the brotherly pilots in Thunderbird 1?
  3. And why was the patriarch named Jeff? Was there any astronautical connection with that name?
Given the length of time that has elapsed since the iconic Thunderbirds was made I'm not expecting any definitive answers, but my curiosity has gotten the better of me and I've thrown it open to opinions. Anybody?

Have to admit I still love Thunderbirds 60 years later.

I think the answer to your question is just "Britishness."

Deke is not a particularly recognisable name for British kids and Wally has certain connotations. It's interchangeable with "plonker."
