This week I was watching the latest episode of Antiques Roadshow on PBS and the following space item was presented. The episode is Castle Farms Hour 2, filmed in Charlevoix, Michigan.Apollo 11 crew signed cover, appraised at $3,000 to $4,000. One thing to note, this appears to be one of the "Plugged 9" Cape Canaveral cancels on an Orbit cachet envelope. It has a filled in 9 and the break in the first C of "Cape"

Yes, indeed, this is one of the lighter-side "Plugged 9" fake cancel varieties. It was mostly used on Orbit engraved cachet covers that included hundreds for all the twelve Gemini flights up to mostly Apollo 11. Even if such covers were crew signed, I have always stayed away from them. There was even an USPS postal investigation that had examined several of them that resulted in a report of their findings. I was not a fan nor supporter of those conclusions for a variety of reasons. | |
