I came across a photo of an early Enterprise flight. She was wearing a "tailcone". I have got to admit that I like the look... but what was it for? http://www.dfrc.nasa.gov/gallery/photo/ALT/Small/ECN-8611.jpg Noah [This message has been edited by mensax (edited February 19, 2003).] |

It was for aerodynamics. It made it easier for the SCA pilot to fly the SCA/Orbiter. |

They tail cone was used on the ALT flights. The last two free flights (4 and 5) were without the tail cone. It is also used when an Orbiter has to be flown on the SCA(747, NA905 or NA911)to CA or FL. It makes the orbiter more aero friendly for the tail of the SCA. |

The tailcone lowered drag during tests. They did five free flights of the Enterprise, in addition to the many, "Captive," tests. It flew 2 or 3 flights with the tailcone on and the balance with the tail cone off. Take a look at the stats on the flight time. The flights with the tailcone off, were much shorter in duration to the flights with it on. This is due to the increased drag. They use the tailcone on to this day for the ferry flights. Again, to reduce the drag. ------------------ Warm Regards Douglas Henry Enjoy yourself and have fun.... it is only a hobby! | |
