In flipping through my National Geographic about Apollo 11, I was reminded about the mementos left on the Moon by Neil & Buzz.
  1. The Apollo 1 emblem (was it a patch?),
  2. a gold olive branch and
  3. a disc with messages from world leaders.
My question is where were they placed? Is there any documented evidence such as the Surface Journal or has anyone heard Neil or Buzz speak about this?

Were they put in the footpad or by the flag?

If anyone knows it's you folks. I look forward to learning more.

Tim

I believe this will be covered in detail in the upcoming book, We Came in Peace: The Untold Story of the Apollo 11 Silicon Disc by fellow cS member Tahir Rahman.

In the meantime, check the Surface Journal entries beginning at 111:36:38 and then at 114:52:18...

The Journal is located here; each voice entry has a mission elapsed time stamp on it. For example:
quote:
111:36:38 Armstrong: How about that package out of your sleeve? Get that?

111:36:53 Aldrin: No.

111:36:55 Armstrong: Okay, I'll get it. When I get up there (to the porch).

Thanks for all the help. I was unable to view the video. Can anyone who has seen it tell me if Buzz dropped the mementos onto the surface with his left or right hand (I'm guessing "right" by the description).

Thanks,
Tim

According to the website Tranquillity Base Today, Buzz dropped the package with the memorabilia to the right of the ladder (if you are facing the LM). It contained an Apollo 1 emblem, a gold olive branch, 2 Soviet Coins, and 2 message discs.

Most likely it was a Beta Cloth pouch. It fit in Buzz's suit arm pocket.

I met with Buzz Aldrin in Phoenix at Spacefest. Indeed, the memorial items and silicon disc were in his shoulder pocket. They were in a white beta cloth pouch. Much more will be presented when my book is done. Dr. Aldrin gave a great blurb for it:
quote:
Neil Armstrong and I almost forgot about the silicon disc. But none of us should forget the messages beautifully portrayed in Rahman's book, "We Came in Peace for all Mankind."
We are estimating a before Christmas release. It will contain all 74 messages from the disc and more about the ceremonial aspects of the mission.

Some future pragmatic prospector would be well advised to go after the boots, PLSS, and camera, that they tossed out the hatch prior to lift-off.

I think the landing sites should be off limits to anyone. They are like national parks or monuments and belong to the people. Even the footprints are not to be disturbed, IMO.

I'm trying to find an accurate list of items Apollo 11 left on the Moon. I found this one but am not sure if it's accurate.

Does anyone know of an accurate list for items left by A-11? And/or items left by other missions?

I especially would like to know if there are any pictures of the two medals left to commemorate cosmonauts Gagarin and Komarov.

Can you imagine if NASA collected a lot of these items, and others at other bases, and brought them home for viewing and exhibit?

Or, sell them on eBay and watch private collectors fund Constellation.

See the link above for Tranquillity Base Today, as it provides a comprehensive, well-researched inventory.
