Has anyone used ChatGPT for projected auction valuation of their space collection? |

No. And I couldn't understand any reason why anyone would! You'd get a similar result by asking any random bloke off of the street - because that's exactly how the algorithms work, only by utilising a 1,000 random blokes or more. And before anybody interjects with how the AI doesn't just interrogate random samples, but utilises past auction and sales results, I'll still answer in the negative. And that's because I know for a fact I've paid well under the average for sought after examples, as well as paying wildly inflated figures for others. And believe me, nothing actually "averages out". On edit: Plus, and that's because I just tried it, it would take forever and a day to actually enter all the data required for ChatGPT just to have a guess, whereas if I actually did want to sell my collection (which I don't) I could ring up Florian Noller (or other respectable dealers, such as Charlie, Anthony and others) and have a conversation about the value etc., and reach an agreement in minutes. |

I agree that AI platforms like ChatGPT should not be the sole reference for determining value. They can often overinflate or undervalue items, so it is essential to conduct independent research through historical sales data, collector sites, and established media. As I liquidate my 40-year collection, I have found that while AI is not a definitive source for pricing, it is an incredibly useful tool for identification. By uploading photos, I can receive helpful historical information regarding the era and production of my items. However, as most AI platforms suggest, it is vital to verify the information provided. Given that I am selling hundreds of items, I rely on AI daily to help point me in the right direction for identification. For items where I remain in doubt, I also consult expert collectors who have been very gracious with their expertise. |

Where are you selling? Are you listing patches (just an assumption based on your user name). On the subject of AI, maybe I'll have a go at uploading some pictures of items I know about, and see how it does. |

Search of an auction aggregator (Live Auctioneer for example) would return higher confidence results in my opinion, having it AI enabled would be a potential plus (they may already be thinking about or have implemented). |

I am currently selling my collection of space patches through eBay, social media groups, and private sales. Many collectors may remember my former .com website, "SPACE SOUP PATCHES," which I managed from the late 1990s through 2008. That site served strictly as a visual identification gallery for well over 1,000 Space patches and also other galleries of early Sci-Fi Space related images. I DID NOT sell from that website. It was strictly for the benefit of those who collected like I did. I must admit it enhanced my collecting world through contacts immensely! I specialize in scarce and low-production original patches, though please note that my collection primarily consists of items released prior to 2008. I prefer private sales for those seeking specific items, so please feel free to message me if you are looking for a particular patch. There are mission related patches from Apollo through the early 2000s shuttle missions, payload, experiment, and contractor patches all part of my collection. Variations, different manufacturers etc. I do not have any flown patches. I've been away from collecting a while, but still find there is a lot of mystery out there. collectSPACE helps me to this day with updates for identification of many items I have. |

Real people appraise and appreciate valuable (financial and emotional) items, not ChatGPT or whatever computer bot! | |
