Isn't it amazing how many ebay sellers (or their friends) have mothers, fathers, grandfathers, etc., who worked for NASA? Evidently, NASA has employed a greater percentage of the US population than even WalMart or McDonalds. Anyway, kind of difficult to see the signatures in those small photos, but the Grissom, at least, seems to match the first autopen example in the Vaughan/Gutzke booklet. Dave |

Actually I believe the seller is probably telling the truth about the family member. Check out their other sold offerings and there's an STS-2 flown flag presentation in the name of Helen Montgomery, a perfect John Young ISP on a Gemini portrait in the same name, an Apollo 14 signed litho inscribed in the same name...Unfortunately, the signatures on the Mercury 7 litho all appear to be Autopens apart from the Carpenter, Glenn, and Shepard (which may be a secretarial). The photos are very bad though so I could be mistaken. Edited by spaced out on November 09, 2007 at 02:03 AM. |

I agree with spaceed out, even though a better scan would be more helpful, but I could see autopen patterns with everyone except Glenn and Carpenter. Shepard, on the other hand, appears to be a secretarial as I could bearly make out one of his common secretarial traits. The signature placement of Carpenter is of note, or a bit unusual, as he normally wouldn't sign in such a "tight" area. |

The seller sent me better images and the Grissom and Slayton looked like autopens to me. The others were tougher to tell based on my experience. The seller was very responsive and did not seem to be trying to deceive anyone, and said she was going to make sure the winning bidder knew of the possible autopens.Mike |
