National Aviation Hall of Fame release
The National Aviation Hall of Fame Announces the 'Class of 2027'

The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) is proud to announce the outstanding individuals selected for induction into the Hall with the Class of 2027. These trailblazers have made groundbreaking contributions to aviation and aerospace, inspiring future generations. Their induction ceremony will take place on September 24, 2027, in Dayton, Ohio, underscoring the NAHF's enduring mission to honor America's aerospace legends and inspire future leaders.

Since its founding in 1962, Enshrinement into the NAHF has widely been recognized as the pinnacle of individual achievement in aviation and space exploration, celebrating pioneers who have shaped the industry while inspiring future generations to follow in their groundbreaking footsteps. With 283 notable individuals enshrined to date, it remains the only Congressionally chartered aviation hall of fame in the United States. The inductees are chosen by a distinguished panel of aviation professionals from across the country who serve on the NAHF Board of Nominations, undertaking the challenging task of selecting the most deserving pioneers in air and space each year.

"The National Aviation Hall of Fame is honored to announce the Class of 2027," said Aimee Maruyama, President and CEO of the National Aviation Hall of Fame. "Each year, we recognize inductees whose achievements have shaped history and continue to inspire future generations. From the entrepreneurial vision that advanced model rocketry and commercial air travel to the engineering breakthroughs that carried us to new frontiers in aviation and space exploration, this class is extraordinary in every way. We are grateful to the NAHF Board of Nominations for putting forward such a distinguished group of nominees."

Meet the Distinguished Class of 2027

The NAHF Class of 2027 is a remarkable ensemble of individuals who have left an indelible mark on the aviation and space industries. Their contributions span a wide spectrum of accomplishments, furthering the frontiers of flight and exploration. This year's honorees include:

  • J. Bob Balaram

Visionary aerospace engineer and NASA innovator whose pioneering work made history with Ingenuity, the first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flight on another planet. As originator and Chief Engineer of the Mars Helicopter project at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Balaram transformed a once-radical concept into a technology that opened a new era of planetary exploration. Over a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades, he also advanced Mars rover technology, robotic systems, and entry, descent, and landing simulations used on multiple NASA missions. His groundbreaking contributions continue to shape the future of aerospace innovation and extraterrestrial flight.

  • Vernon Estes

As an innovator, inventor, and entrepreneur in Model Rocketry, Vernon Estes sparked the imagination of generations through his innovative work in aerospace education. He founded Estes Industries in 1958 and invented "Mabel," an automated machine that enabled the mass production of safe, affordable model rocket engines.

By making model rocketry widely accessible, Estes inspired millions of young people to pursue interests in science, engineering, aviation, and space exploration. His innovations established model rocketry as a lasting educational tool and launched a hobby that continues to influence future aerospace leaders today.

  • (the late) Neal Vernon Loving

Pioneering aviator, aircraft designer, and aeronautical engineer Neal Vernon Loving's perseverance broke barriers in American aviation. Born February 4, 1916 and raised in Detroit, MI, he later settled in Yellow Springs, Ohio. After losing both legs in a 1944 glider accident, Loving returned to flight, designed and built the celebrated midget racer Loving's Love, and became the first African American certified to race airplanes.

Earlier, he helped establish an all-Black Civil Air Patrol squadron and later co-founded the Wayne School of Aeronautics, expanding opportunities for aspiring Black aviators. He went on to earn an engineering degree and pursue a long career in aerospace research. Through ingenuity, determination, and a lifelong devotion to flight, Loving challenged barriers of both race and disability while demonstrating what was possible in aircraft design, engineering, and aviation.

  • Charles J. Precourt

Decorated Air Force veteran, former NASA Chief Astronaut, test pilot, and aerospace leader whose career has advanced human spaceflight, international cooperation, and aviation safety. A veteran of four space shuttle missions, Precourt piloted Atlantis during the first shuttle docking with Russia's Mir space station and later served as Chief of NASA's Astronaut Corps, overseeing the selection, training, and mission readiness of shuttle and International Space Station crews.

A U.S. Air Force test pilot and retired Colonel, he went on to lead major aerospace propulsion programs at Northrop Grumman supporting NASA and national defense. A current board member at EAA and NBAA and the Chairman of the Citation Jet Pilots Safety and Education Foundation, he continues to promote safety throughout business and general aviation. With more than 13,000 flight hours in over 100 aircraft types, Precourt's enduring leadership has strengthened safety, innovation, and collaboration across aviation and space exploration.

  • (the late) Judith A. Resnik

Trailblazing astronaut, engineer, and scientist who helped open the frontiers of spaceflight to a new generation of explorers. Selected in NASA's landmark 1978 astronaut class as one of the first six women chosen for the U.S. Astronaut Corps, Judith Resnik became the second American woman to fly in space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the maiden flight of Space Shuttle Discovery in 1984.

An accomplished electrical engineer with a doctorate from the University of Maryland, she contributed to spacecraft systems, software, and operation of the Shuttle's robotic arm. Resnik lost her life aboard Challenger in 1986, but her brilliance, courage, and pioneering achievements remain an enduring part of America's spaceflight legacy.

  • Steven Udvar- Hazy

Visionary aviation entrepreneur and philanthropist who transformed the economics of commercial flight and reshaped the global airline industry. Widely credited with pioneering modern aircraft leasing, Udvar-Hazy co-founded International Lease Finance Corporation in 1973, creating new opportunities for airlines around the world to acquire and operate modern aircraft while influencing generations of airliner design and fleet development.

He later founded Air Lease Corporation, extending his impact across commercial aviation. An accomplished pilot with more than 11,000 flight hours, Udvar-Hazy has also made an extraordinary commitment to preserving and sharing aerospace history, including transformational support for the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. His vision has profoundly influenced how the world finances, designs, operates, and experiences commercial aviation.
