Space Cover of the Week, Week 818 (August 10, 2025) Space Cover 818: Jim Lovell – A TributeToday's Space Cover of the Week is a tribute to the late astronaut Jim Lovell, who died on Aug. 7, 2025 at age 97. The cover above is an Apollo 13 insurance-type cover, postmarked at KSC on April 11, 1970, the launch date for Apollo 13. It carries a Bishop Cachet and has been signed by the originally named Apollo 13 crew, Jim Lovell, Ken Mattingly, and Fred Haise. It is a tribute to the well documented leadership and effort of Lovell to successfully bring home the crippled Apollo 13 crew (with Swigert having replaced Mattingly) through excruciating conditions. And Lovell was no newcomer to spaceflight when he commanded Apollo 13. He started his spaceflight career setting a (then) record 14 days on-orbit with Frank Borman on Gemini 7. Below is a SpaceCraft Cachet postmarked at Cape Canaveral on December 4, 1965, on the launch date of Gemini 7, and signed by Lovell and Borman. Lovell and Buzz Aldrin closed out the Gemini Program on the flawless Gemini 12 mission. And Lovell, along with Frank Borman and Bill Anders, flew the historic Apollo 8 mission – the first to orbit the Moon. Below is a crew insignia cachet postmarked at KSC on December 21, 1968, for the launch of Apollo 8 and it has been signed by Lovell, Borman, and Anders. Jim Lovell led a potentially fatal mission to a safe conclusion, set a (then) record for spaceflight duration, read the Book of Genesis from lunar orbit, and was the first person to fly in space four times – a hero among heroes. Do any of you have any favorite Jim Lovell covers? If so, please post them as a tribute to this great man! |

For this week's Space Cover of the Week, it's a very appropriate topic with the recent passing of yet another American hero and legendary Gemini and Apollo astronaut Jim Lovell.Captain Lovell was the first astronaut to fly four spaceflight missions from 1965 to 1970, having spent nearly 30 days in space, of which Apollo 13 as we all know, almost took his life along with crewmates Haise and Swigert. Enjoyed seeing the crew signed covers, Dennis, and hopefully in tribute we can see more signed covers by Lovell and I will try to submit some of my own starting from his early astronaut career spanning into his later life.

Here's a unique cover signed by Jim Lovell. It’s an Apollo 13 crew-signed cover cancelled for the launch of Apollo 13 on April 11, 1970. What makes it unique is that not only does it have an Official NASA Cachet (ONC) but it also has a Kennedy Space Center (KSC) hand cancel. Although Apollo 13 crew-signed covers aren’t hard-to-find I don't think there are many covers with an ONC and a KSC HC. |

On April 13, 2025, in SCOTW #801, "A Tribute-Lovell and Aldrin," we posted a number of covers/autographs paying tribute to both Jim Lovell and Buzz Aldrin, as being the two longest living NASA Astronauts. With Lovell sadly passing away at 97, Aldrin, at 95, now holds the distinction as the oldest living NASA Astronaut. The covers shown in SCOTW #801 are autographed by Lovell for his four spaceflights: GT-7, GT-12, Apollo 8 and Apollo 13. | |
