With all the recent talk about moving a retired NASA space shuttle for political reasons, it inspired me to go back through the memorabilia I picked up during the original delivery of the winged orbiters to their museum homes in 2012.

The patches have more or less been well documented on this forum, as has most of the medallions, but there were also a good number of lapel pins that were created as part of the process. For those interested, here is a look at the three-page (and a pocket) album I put together.

The front page has a clear cover, so the pins can be viewed even when closed. I used this for the few Discovery and Enterprise pins that were released at the time, as well as some rarer Atlantis and Endeavour pins. I also included (at the bottom) pins for the orbiter trainers and mockups.

The first pin flew aboard the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft during its three museum ferry flights. The Kennedy Space Center Atlantis pin preceded the design of the exhibit's logo. The Endeavour pin was distributed by the Inglewood Police Department during the orbiter's road trip to the California Science Center.

The second page is a full collection of space shuttle Atlantis pins that were for sale on the day the exhibit opened at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

Similarly, the third page is a collection of California Science Center pins featuring three designs in different sizes.

Lastly, the outer pocket holds mostly pinback buttons that either were part of the venues' campaigns to be selected for a shuttle or were from the day of delivery. This set also includes two buttons from Japan, where they had a full-scale stack integrated as part of a roller coaster.

I am happy to provide further details about any of the pins, and if you see or know of a pin I am missing, please let me know. Thanks!

All times are CT (US)
