Interesting story in this morning's USA Today: Apollo 12 art caper: Does the moon harbor a tiny museum?
One small step for man, one giant leap for modern art?

Andy Warhol and five other artists likely left a 1969 calling card -- a so-called moon museum of six sketches etched in miniature on a penny-wide ceramic chip -- on the Apollo 12 lunar lander, an upcoming PBS show concludes.

The miniature ceramic chip bearing art by Any Warhol, et al, if it actually was on board the Apollo 12 lunar module, begs the question: How many other small mementos were placed on board lunar modules on the moon? How many workers wrote their kids names in an inconspicuous spot on a lander?

I bet there are lots of them...

Interplanetary art smuggler sought by PBS detectives for moon mystery questioning

In November 1969, a plot was launched to smuggle potentially priceless works of art by the likes of Warhol and Rauschenberg out of the country. Despite it being carried out during one of the century's most widely watched events, the art was lifted in secret and deposited a quarter of a million miles away, where only a dozen men would ever visit...

I always though that the LM was a work of art in itself. For one thing, the thermal wrappings makes it look like an artpiece from Christo.

I was always glad that though the booster proudly displayed the colors of the nation who endeavoured the first Moon explorations, the CM-CSM and the LM flew and landed unadorned, "for all mankind".

This sounds very much like the story that the Apollo 11 crew left an advertisement on the Moon for a hotel in Acapulco.
