Cosmosphere Closes Portion of Hall of Space Museum to Address Plumbing Mishap August 7, 2015, at approximately 5 p.m., a break in a sewage line caused contaminated water to enter the Cosmosphere's basement. The water spillage impacted the flooring, walls, and some supplies in an educational classroom, as well as the main stairway into the Hall of Space Museum, the German Gallery, and a display featuring the replica Bell X-1 aircraft. Cosmosphere leadership took immediate action to assess the extent of the damage. Repair and cleaning of affected areas and materials is already underway. "Fortunately, we became aware of the break very soon after it occurred," said Richard Hollowell, Cosmosphere CEO. "We immediately took steps to insure the safety of visitors, staff and artifacts, and to begin remediation efforts. While we are disappointed that this disrupts the complete experience for visitors, we are grateful the damage was contained to such a small area." The Hall of Space will continue to be open to visitors via an alternate entrance while repair and cleaning of the affected areas is completed. During this time, visitors will be unable to access the German Gallery and the display of the replica Bell X-1 aircraft. An announcement will be made when full access to the Hall of Space Museum is once again available. All upcoming events will proceed as scheduled.
