On April 17, 1970 the incredible story of Apollo 13 played out 300,000 km above Earth. Now, to mark the forthcoming 40th anniversary of the spacecraft’s dramatic rescue, you can experience the tension for yourself with over an hour of video on Sky at Night Magazine's April issue cover CD-ROM. This special disc features 40 minutes of nail-biting footage from the BBC archive, much of it unseen for the past 40 years. Alongside interviews with the recovery divers and pilots, there's video of the studio team of James Burke, Cliff Michelmore and Patrick Moore, who can't hide their tension in the mission's final stages. There's also a NASA video showing how controllers managed to guide the crippled spacecraft round the Moon and safely back home. This half-hour film includes on-board footage shot in the craft, plus behind-the-scenes video of staff and astronauts troubleshooting the fault and putting an emergency plan into action. What's more there's declassified NASA documents on the life- threatening fault that hit the spacecraft and a gallery of images of key moments in the Apollo 13 mission. The April issue of Sky at Night Magazine goes on sale on Tuesday 23 March, priced £4.25.
