The spacecraft landed in the water about 4.5 miles from the recovery ship, the USS Kearsarge, and was placed on deck approximately 40 minutes later. In order to gain medical data as early as possible, the NASA flight surgeon aboard the recovery was equipped with an 8-foot extension cord for the biomedical cable. Immediately after the hatch was opened, this cord was attached to the astronaut's biosensor plug and blood pressure fitting and connected to the spacecraft onboard recorder to record blood pressures and ECG before, during, and after egress. This system was extremely effective in deriving egress data.
