The NASA archives housed at the University of Houston Clear Lake are a tremendous resource for NASA history. I've used them many times in my research for several books. I recently went to their website for a new project I'm working on to discover that the site has been revamped. I had trouble figuring out how to negotiate the site so I sent UHCL an email asking for help. They responded quickly informing me that site had been updated and included the link (which I already had). Still confused on how to use the site, I tried to find a NASA memo that I had accessed years ago, but with no luck. I sent another email asking for help but have not received a response. Does anyone know the status of the UHCL NASA archives or if they still allow the general public to access their NASA files? |

Following the link in your posting, I found this very sad notice: As of October 2024, the NASA Johnson Space Center History Collection is only open for research in-person to the following researchers, under federal United States government Export Control Regulations and International Traffic in Arms (ITAR) regulations: badged NASA employees; badged NASA contractors; UHCL faculty; UHCL staff; and UHCL students meeting federal requirements (some international students may be restricted from accessing the collection). Any questions as to the access restrictions should be directed to the UHCL Archives' Associate Director. I've used the UHCL archives for many years, with generally wonderful results. Over the past 5 years I've generally perceived a deterioration in their service. Now it looks like public access is a thing of the past. FOIA appears to be our only recourse now. |

I spent many an hour there years ago helped by wonderfully friendly staff who did there best to help me find and research my particular interest. So sad that it has got to this.

Thanks for the comments. Somehow I was hoping that I had missed something. Like you both said the staff was always very helpful, and there are some wonderful documents in their collection. The last time I accessed the archives, everything I asked for had been digitized, so I didn't need to go in person. But it was fun to make a request, go there and see the real documents — often a dozen or more large carts full of files. I spent many days there. | |
