Does anyone know for sure what ever happened to Project Mercury surgeon William Douglas?

I had heard that he died on the east coast while returning home from attending John Glenn's Shuttle launch. I have not been able to find any info that can confirm this.

John Glenn's shuttle flight (STS-95) took place on 29 Oct - 7 Nov 1998. Dr. William K. Douglas died on 15 Nov 1998 (born 5 Sep 1922).

Bill and his wife Mariwade were friends and after Bill retired from McDonnell (Douglas) they retired and moved to New Mexico.

Pete Conrad told me about Bill's passing a few months before he left us. I tried to contact Mariwade, but to no avail.

Mariwade was the president of the docents at the California Museum of Science and Industry before she left for New Mexico, and tutored me about those days and her "boys" as she called the Mercury 7. They were the originators of the Mercury 7 Foundation and started the Space Camp/museum in Florida.

All times are CT (US)
