hlbjr Member Posts: 475 From: Delray Beach Florida USA Registered: Mar 2006	posted 04-13-2006 04:36 PM I was curious what happened to the other 2 Apollo 1 spouses after the fire? I saw Betty Grissom at Oshkosh in 1987 with 3 of the Mercury astronauts (Slayton, Schirra, & Cooper) and she looked and sounded good. I have heard that Pat White was particularly devastated by Ed's death and I was hoping both she and Martha Chaffee ended up having good lives. Any information?
mjanovec Member Posts: 3811 From: Midwest, USA Registered: Jul 2005	posted 04-13-2006 04:40 PM I don't much about what happened to Martha Chaffee, but I have to report that Pat White sadly committed suicide in the 1980s. I haven't read much about why she did it...if she left a note explaining her reasons and/or if it was directly related to her heartbreak about the Apollo 1 fire. And it's really none of my business, so I don't ever expect to know why. I believe the family is very guarded about the subject and haven't said that much about it over the years.
