Before the crew change, I'm presuming the back up crew for Apollo 13 was John Young, Jack Swigert and Charlie Duke.

Are there any pictures of this crew that anyone knows of?

I really expected that this was going to be an easy one -- just a quick Google search and done. In reality, this led me down an hours-long rabbit hole. I couldn't believe it.

So, what I found:

  • There is no official NASA portrait of the backup crew.

  • There are a few candid shots during training and testing that show various combinations of two of the three backup crew members at a time, but none that shows all three backup crew members in the same photo.

  • ChatGPT suggested that there may be uncaptioned photos in the NASA archives.
Wow, that ate up a whole morning.

Interesting. In all, I have 436 photos related to Apollo 13 but none of them contain any two of John Young, Charlie Duke or Jack Swigert together, much less three.

I have a single photo of Duke with Vance Brand and Fred Haise at an equipment review at GAEC and one of Young in the KC-135, and none of Swigert (before getting promoted to the flight crew). I never noticed before!

All times are CT (US)
