During the autograph show, I was fortunate enough to be on the Thursday VIP tour which stopped at Pad 34 (amongst other hallowed places). Looking around, I realized there is a lot of infrastructure which goes under the pad, i.e. the gas lines for the Lox, RP1, and the control runs from the blockhouse out to the pad. An overhead view shows these lines on the pad surface itself. What is under the pad? Can you walk under it (not that I'm eager to meet the snakes, spiders, and God knows what else lurks in those dark, tight spaces)?

LOL- there are lots of stories about techs opening underground cable breakout rooms or access boxes and finding nests of rattlesnakes!

Specific to 34- I spent some months working out there in the late '90's. At that time, EG&G had a few shops and labs, and the NASA Exchange kept offices in the Launch Support Operations Building which was the only structure there still functional with utilities & such. Knowing the history, I of course held the place in great reverence and got to roam around a bit during breaks. I certainly knew better than to enter any tunnels or other crannies inviting to rattlers. I spent many nights working alone out there, and (excuse the expression) it is a "spooky" place. It's 'spooky' in broad daylight, let alone the middle of the night under a full moon!
I would not go so far with the 'spooky' as these guys, http://www.spookhunters.com/spookhunt/NASA/hunt.php
but you may find their link interesting in that they have photos of some of the underground areas you're asking about.

Thanks for the link spacecat. I had no idea there were such expansive spaces under LC34. I've found almost no reference to those spaces or their functions online.

I've heard it suggested that the remains of Apollo 1 and the material that is stored in Langley be placed in these passageways as a final resting place. A good idea but NASA better make sure the place is secure.

"The old abandoned Launch Pad of the Apollo missions is believed to be haunted by the ghosts of the three astronauts that lost their lives in a tragic fire".Is a silly thing in my opinion.Very bad taste.Gus,Ed and Roger were pioneers of the progress, not characters for superstitious silly stories.

I think the spookhunters site must have been known to a lot of people on the tour. Several people had to be told to get out of the brush and I wasn't sure what they were looking for until now.

Friday night after the launch our bus driver took a short cut to avoid the traffic back to Cocoa Beach. The whole Canaveral area has next to no lighting at all. It was extremely dark out there so I understand how people could image this type of thing. I was also told by several of the bus drivers that the amount of wildlife (gators, snakes, wild pigs, eaglse, buzzards and small panthers) are all over the area.

All times are CT (US)
