Akron Bicentennial Forgotten History Forum Series Akron's Spaceflight LegacyAugust 12, 2025, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Akron-Summit County Public Library Auditorium Join us for the next installment of the Forgotten History Forum Series presented by FirstEnergy Foundation, and in partnership with our exclusive media partner, PBS Western Reserve. Spaceflight historian and museum professional Matt Polner discusses the remarkable story of the Mercury spacesuit, forged in Akron and launched into the cosmos. Experience the trials and tribulations faced by B.F. Goodrich engineers as they grappled with the complexities of space travel, and celebrate the enduring legacy that Akron has played on the advancement of human space exploration. This event will discuss the development of the Mercury spacesuit at B.F. Goodrich in Akron, with additional topics touched upon including Goodrich suits from Wiley Post, Type/XH series, Model/Mark series, Gemini, and Apollo. Spacesuit and pressure suit artifacts will be on display that will be of interest to collectSPACE readers. |

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this event! It was great to see a few collectSPACE members there. We were grateful to have family members in attendance of Carl Effler (technical manager over suit engineering and Russell Colley's direct supervisor), Wayne Galloway (product manager for suits), Richard Shaw (general foreman over suit manufacturing), and Ray Anderson (suit engineer).
