I have never seen a similar patch with what appears to be the embroidery mesh backing left on. Anyone else have similar period patches with this anomaly?

I do remember seeing at least one shuttle patch like that with the mesh on part of the back, but I don't remember any details of which mission/s.

My Skylab 2 patch looks the same on the back. I got it back in 1984.
