Over the past year, I've been working passionately on a space-themed project that I'm thrilled to finally share with this community.

"Space Patches: A Journey Through the Cosmos" is a completely free, non-commercial, and educational eBook series dedicated to the rich visual legacy of space mission patches.

These books are a tribute to humanity's journey into space, from the earliest missions to the latest launches, and feature both iconic and lesser-known missions from NASA, SpaceX, Rocket Lab, Chinese programs, and more.

Whether you're a lifelong spaceflight enthusiast, a patch collector, a history buff, or just someone who's fascinated by the cosmos, these eBooks offer a beautifully designed, continuously updated reference that brings space history to life.

  • Available Volumes:
  • Human Spaceflights
  • Space Shuttle
  • SpaceX
  • Rocket Lab
  • A Year in Space 2025
  • The Ultimate Collection
This is a labor of love, entirely free to access, with no ads, sign-ups, or sales involved. I'd be incredibly grateful for any feedback (even a short blog comment!) to help shape future editions. Thanks for checking it out!

This is a great idea!

Are the books only available as PDFs? You may wish to consider making them available on e-book platforms. Some years ago I found Apple's iBook software easy to use as shown here. Good luck.

Very good compilation.

Why was a black background chosen? I don't like it.

I tried with Google but it has been refused due to copyright issues. Regarding Apple I have one book available and will try to upload the others too.

Thank you for your question about the choice of a black background in the eBook. This was a conscious design decision, and I’d be happy to share the reasons behind it.

The black background reflects the visual and emotional context of space itself. Space is vast, silent, and dark—and presenting the mission patches against a deep black canvas enhances the connection between the visuals and the environment they were created for.

From a purely visual design perspective, a black background allows the colors and details of the patches to stand out more vividly. Many mission patches are rich in color and intricate design. Against white, these colors can appear flat or washed out, especially if the patches include lighter tones or transparent edges. On black, the colors often look more vibrant and the artwork more striking, giving each patch the prominence it deserves.

In terms of reading experience, especially on digital devices like tablets or screens, dark backgrounds can reduce eye strain in low-light environments, ideal for reading at night or in settings where bright white pages might be too harsh.

Finally, the aesthetic choice also gives the eBook a more modern, museum-like presentation.

I understand that design is subjective, but user feedback like yours is valuable anyway.
