I have a "Glass Shipping Container ASSY SOV" that I've been researching for over a year and finally used Grok AI to get a bit closer to the truth, however I want to verify everything Grok has given me on this item. If anyone has good knowledge with Spacelab hardware, especially optics I'd love your opinion.

First what is SOV?

Spacelab Optical Viewport is what I am leaning on, as the over engineered design of this container was made to hold special glass very securely.

But I have also heard it could stand for Shuttle Orbiter Vehicle too. Is that true?

Was this flown?

Serial numbers are 001 on the assembly, and there are multiple layers of MDAC-HB Monrovia inspection seals over each of the side openings, at least four that I can count, which seems like this means re-used multiple times.

AI can search all the serial numbers pretty well, and gives a lot of good info on the label, but there were 22 missions with Spacelab components on it. This item comes with a clean room notebook too, where for a year in 1988 to 1989 all the monthly cleanings, nitrogen purging and inspections were logged in by technicians.

I'm hoping for a little more insight on this item from any experts on NAS8-32350 Shuttle/Spacelab era items.

To add, this case was regularly checked and cleaned every two to three weeks and purged with nitrogen for over a year. Would that indicate it being actively used for storing the Spacelab Optical Viewport after being removed from missions?

My research has the Spacelab Optical Viewport mounted on the Spacelab end cone for the SDIO Starlab mission. Which never flew.

All times are CT (US)
