Something was brought to my attention over the weekend that I thought members would appreciate seeing.

Some years ago, a mould used to make the silicone soul on the Apollo EVA boots was snapped up by a collector who then went on to make a very nice limited edition presentation piece making use of that mould. Well this is the cast used to make the original mould.

Made from a composite called "Repro" by ILC model makers and weighing approximately 8 pounds, this cast formed the mould from which Neil Armstrong's boot, and most of the remaining moonwalkers' boots, were made.

Cool and historic in equal measure.

Very cool. Pattern and mold making is an art form in itself. Very interesting to see this piece and it is good to know some pieces have survived. Thank you for posting.

I'd like to know how ILC technicians managed to cast the sole of the lunar overshoe in the negative mold. The main issue seems to be achieving a consistent wall thickness.

Did they use a system with a suspended core?To allow the extraction of a hypothetical core, it would have to be made of a flexible material, or in two parts, or a collapsible core. The area around the top of the toe would be tricky.

This is just my guess.

A slush-casting process, perhaps? Pouring a certain amount of resin and sloshing it around to coat all the walls, which would probably work fairly well, but would give uneven thickness since the resin tends to pool at the base of the walls under gravity.

Could someone shed some light on this? Any photos, videos, PDFs, or even personal recollections would be much appreciated.

Thank in advance

Does anyone have information about the technique used to pour the silicone for the soles into the mold?
