"The Big Challenge" is a nice old documentary about the construction of Kennedy Space Center, presented by NASA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Regarding the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB):
Hundreds of sand filled 3-foot diameter steel pilings were driven 160 feet down into the bedrock to support the VAB. All together if placed end to end they would reach out 126 miles.
Regarding Pad 39-A:
Five million cubic yards of water borne fill material was dredged onto the launch site. Soon an 80 foot mountain of surcharge was shaped in the form of a truncated pyramid to consolidate the subgrade beneath.
