History of the Apollo and Skylab Astronaut Rescue Teams by William Killen William D. "Bill" Killen, National Fire Heritage Center President/CEO and past president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, has authored and published "The History of the Apollo and Skylab Astronaut Rescue Teams."The release of the 186-page book coincides with the 50th anniversary of Apollo 12, the sixth crewed flight in the United States Apollo program, and the second to land on the Moon. It was launched on November 14, 1969, from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The book contains more than 200 photographs and drawings, including several rare unpublished photographs depicting the procedures used to rescue astronauts from the Apollo and Skylab command modules. Killen is one of five surviving members of the original Apollo Astronaut Rescue Team and previously retired from the Holston Army Ammunition Plant, Kingsport, TN, and as Director, U.S. Navy Fire & Emergency Services, Washington, DC. Proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the National Fire Heritage Center, Emmitsburg, Maryland. - Order forms are available through the following email address: Kirkbo65@charter.net

I just received my copy of History of Astronaut Rescue Teams. It is an awesome book just from looking at it and can't wait to read it.I also have the History of The Kennedy Space Center Fire Department book by Bill Killen and Lee Starrick which is another great book about the Fire/Rescues of KSC! |

Air Force Museum Foundation release National Fire Heritage Center President to Sign Book About Apollo and Skylab Astronaut Rescue TeamNational Fire Heritage Center (NFHC) President Bill Killen, Chief Fire Officer, Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers, and member of the original Apollo Astronaut Rescue Team will be signing copies of his book "The History of the Apollo and Skylab Astronaut Rescue Team" on November 26, 2019 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Air Force Museum Store, located inside the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, OH. The Air Force Museum Store is operated by the Air Force Museum Foundation. Chief Killen's fire service career spans sixty-two years and includes service as Fire Chief, Holston Army Ammunition Plant, Kingsport, TN, Director, United States Navy Fire & Emergency Services, Washington, DC, Fire Chief, Metropolitan Washington Airports, Alexandria, VA, and the Apollo Astronaut Rescue Team, Kennedy Space Center Fire Department, Florida. He served as President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs 2005-06, President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs Foundation 1998-2003 and Vice President, The Institution of Fire Engineers, US Branch. Chief Killen, the recipient of numerous awards during his career, was awarded The Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service (2006) and the Military Firefighter Heritage Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award (2017). He was inducted in the Navy Fire & Emergency Serves Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Department of Defense Fire Emergency Services Hall of Fame in 2013. |

Bill Killen spoke with Fire Rescue 1 about his experiences as a member of the Apollo astronaut rescue team. The Apollo Astronaut Rescue team, Killen said, was made up of volunteers selected from the ranks of the Kennedy Space Center Fire Department."The original team consisted of the two training officers, who served as team commander and team leader, and then there were nine firefighters in different ranks that were selected for the team," he said.
