Origins of 21st Century Space Travel: A History of NASA's Decadal Planning Team and the Vision for Space Exploration, 1999-2004
by Glen Asner and Stephen Garber
On 14 January 2004, President George W. Bush announced that NASA would embark on a new Vision for Space Exploration, less than a year after the Columbia Space Shuttle accident. The President's ambitious agenda included resuming Shuttle flights, completing the International Space Station, and robotic and then human exploration of the Moon and Mars. The story starts in earnest in 1999, when NASA initiated a Decadal Planning Team to generate viable plans for humans and robots to explore beyond low-Earth orbit.

This book provides a detailed historical account of the ideas, debates, and decisions that opened the way for a new generation of spaceflight at the start of the 21st century.
