An interesting alternative history comic album: 1969, L'Odyssée Fantôme by Nicolas Wetterwald.
The Moon, July 1969: Sergei, a Soviet cosmonaut, finds himself in great difficulty and remembers the events that led to this desperate situation.

He remembers the stormy meetings devoted to the implementation of the Soviet lunar program, which had provoked so much controversy within the Politburo itself. He recalls training punctuated by incidents and sabotage, as well as his selection for the crew of the first flight with Svetlana, the only woman on the team. Everything happened in absolute secrecy, as politicians decided to send a Soviet to the moon ahead of the Americans in defiance of security measures.

After a first part of the flight without problems the situation deteriorated with the landing on the Moon. A total electrical failure forced Sergei to make a perilous exit to recover parts of the US probe Surveyor 5. The repair made and batteries recharged, Sergei can resume contact with the control center that informs him they have lost contact with Svetlana. Without Svetlana and his orbital module, there is only one chance for Sergei to return to Earth, that of being rescued by the Americans who landed on the Moon a few hours after him.

Only available in French for now, but perhaps enough interest could convince Amazon to publish an English version as well?

I bought this for Kindle, soon after reading this post.

The artwork is first class and includes very authentic looking images of Soviet space hardware of the 1960's. It mixes fact and fiction, in terms of characters and events, but ultimately, it is a work of fiction, rather than an alternative history.

I found the "flashback" style of narrative rather confusing, but if you have High School French, you'll be able to understand the quite complex story, with a little help from Google Translate!

Recommended, as long as you don't take it too seriously!

Ok. Be cautious. Some websites diffuses illegally ebooks of my comic. There is high risk of phishing. The english official version will be available at the end of the year. All other english versions available today are illegal copies.

All times are CT (US)
