Skylab 3: The NASA Mission Reports
Edited by Dwight Steven Boniecki
With the successful repair of the Skylab workshop by Pete Conrad’s Skylab 2 crew the stage was now set for his fellow Apollo 12 moon walker Alan Bean to lead a full scientific mission to the giant space station. Bean was to be accompanied by two of the next generation of astronauts, Owen Garriott and Jack Lousma. The crew were launched on a Saturn IB on July 28th 1973 for a mission which would last for just short of two months. This would be by far the longest duration mission ever attempted by the United States. Just as the previous mission had required space walks, Skylab 3 would also see the crew venture outside on three separate occasions. The experience gained from these early repair missions would be of incalculable value to the future of manned space exploration.

Having secured the station and completed the repairs begun by Conrad’s crew, Bean, Lousma and Garriott conducted an intensive series of experiments on themselves and on behalf of students back on Earth. They also began the serious study of our home planet through the Skylab Earth Resources Experiment Package and undertook meaningful studies of the Sun using the Apollo Telescope Mount.

Many of the paradigms for life aboard the International Space Station began right here with the flight of Skylab 3. Monitoring the crew’s reaction to long duration exposure to micro-gravity, watching the effect on small organisms, carefully studying the earth’s ecosphere, looking out into deep space with the benefit of “clear skies” and generally learning whether humanity could withstand the rigors of long missions away from the Earth. In this book you will discover everything from the minutiae of complex experiments to the human face of some of the earliest true space residents. Once again the enormous Skylab workshop would provide them with a home.

Included with this book is a DVD featuring rare launch video of the Skylab 3 mission, a tour of Skylab with digital animations, and the documentary “Skylab 3”. ROM content includes the Skylab Mission Rescue Report.

Glad to hear it. I am certain you will be impressed with the amount of background research that has gone into it.

Another great contribution by Dwight to both the Apogee NASA mission report series and to those of us who would like a more comprehensive library with regard to Skylab.

The crew debrief is interesting to read and starts with the crew going off the guided questions to talk about their feelings on the mission timeline and workload...which might have had an effect on the next crew and their interaction with MCCH with reference to their own workload?

Love the DVD but would have been great to have a more detailed countdown as is included in the first book on the Skylab 1 launch countdown, which is alone worth the price of the book!

Am looking forward to the Skylab 4 volume and ASTP after that. These are invaluable reference points and the author should be commended for all the hard work he has put into these projects.

Thanks for the kind words LM5, many people assume editing the reports is child's play, but I can categorically state that it isn't. The mission reports are in bad condition which often means missing pages and illegible text. Most of my time is spent tracking down these missing parts.

As for the SL3 launch video, I tried all avenues and could not locate the complete news pool TV feed. How I would have loved a pristine copy to use. However, I think you will be more than happy with the material on the SL4 disc. As for ASTP, you haven't seen footage look as good as what will be on that disc!

When could we expect to see the ASTP book?

I am hoping mid year, but that all depends on the publisher, Apogee.
