The Birth of NASA: The Work of the Space Task Group, America's First True Space Pioneers by Dutch von Ehrenfried This is the story of the work of the original NASA space pioneers; men and women who were suddenly organized in 1958 from the then National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA) into the Space Task Group. A relatively small group, they developed the initial mission concept plans and procedures for the U. S. space program. Then they boldly built hardware and facilities to accomplish those missions. The group existed only three years before they were transferred to the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas, in 1962, but their organization left a large mark on what would follow. Von Ehrenfried's personal experience with the STG at Langley uniquely positions him to describe the way the group was structured and how it reacted to the new demands of a post-Sputnik era. He artfully analyzes how the growing space program was managed and what techniques enabled it to develop so quickly from an operations perspective. The result is a fascinating window into history, amply backed up by first person documentation and interviews. - Paperback: 300 pages

It almost certainly won't be issued on that date, because the production process still hasn't reached the stage of reviewing the proofs. |

Dutch's book is now available in both PDF and softcover format. I have downloaded the PDF version and can't wait to get stuck in.I think people reading this should bear in mind that this man was actually there in the beginning. This is first hand recall from the Mercury Control days onward, not something that comes about that often. Those of us who are interested in a little more than the astronauts (no disrespect intended) will cherish this opportunity to learn how it all came about. |

Just a heads-up that Dutch will be attending Spacefest VII in Tucson in June and doing a talk and book signings. A great chance to meet this great guy and have both his books signed (he also wrote "The Stratonauts"). |

Will copies of the book be available for sale at Spacefest? (I'd rather buy there and get it signed rather than lugging it all the way.) |

I expect they will be, but as Novaspace cannot carry too many copies at their booth they may be in limited supply. I will check and see if I can get an answer for you. |

Sadly - and I mean that - I won't be able to make it this year due to a conflict of dates. |

Same thing happened to me for SF7, so I understand and sympathize. You will be missed. |
