Galina Balashova: Architect of the Soviet Space Programme
by Philipp Meuser
This publication on the work of the Russian architect Galina Balashova presents a unique collection of designs for Soviet cosmonautics. These include plans and design drawings for both Soyuz capsules and space stations such as Salyut and Mir. Balashova acted as a consultant to the Buran programme, the Soviet equivalent of the US American Space Shuttle. Faced with the duty of demonstrating architectural creativity in manned space capsules, Balashova’s remarkable accomplishments when entrusted with this unprecedented task make an impressive read.

Striving for harmony and beauty, the architect strikes an emotional chord in the high-tech world of propulsion rockets, laboratories and survival equipment. Therefore, it is due to Balashova’s talent that a unique chapter has been added to Soviet architectural history. Her exceptional achievements, including designs for medals and emblems, are still scarcely known today – even in Russia. Galina Balashova currently lives in Korolyov, near Moscow.

This is a beautiful little book! I bought the German edition, which now seems not to be available from Dom publishers.

Lots of illustrations, shedding light on an aspect of Soviet cosmonautics that never got much attention. Beautifully illustrated and devoted to a uniquely talented lady.

Just received my copy of the German edition via Abebooks. Large format hardback book, beautifully illustrated with many unique photos of the construction of Star City, plus other sites. 412 pages, comes with a dust jacket and tracing paper like dust jacket cover.

Anyone knows the reason behind the different number of pages between the German and English editions?

Not seen the paperback copy, but I guess it is only about Galina Balashova whereas the hardback copy has several other chapters and hers is only one of them. Other topics include Russian space related architecture and mural design, Star City construction, Baikonur construction and space stamp design.

The hardback book cover, under the dust jacket, is bright pink. Most unusual. Looks like it has been inspired by the large Russian coffee table type books. It is a pretty expensive book at around $100.
