I notice things have been pretty quiet lately from Spacecraft Films. Are there any sets nearing completion at this time?Have the Apollo 11 (To The Moon) and the Cape sets been put on the back burner for now? I see they are no longer listed on the home page under "upcoming projects." I know there was talk of waiting to see if the higher resolution EVA tapes surfaced for Apollo 11 before issuing the To The Moon set. Does that mean this set is on indefinite hold? (Also, just a friendly word of advice for SF... it might be a good idea to give a quick update to those customers who have pre-ordered these items 6-12 months ago, or longer, on the status of these sets and their orders. Perhaps a customer e-mail newsletter every 3-4 months would do the trick.) |

I know that Mark (Gray) has been on the road, shooting footage for a very exciting new project, which he teased about last month on Spacecraft Films' blog. You'll find an update there, too, about Apollo 11: To The Moon and the Cape and Space Shuttle sets. |

I am also one of those who ordered the "Apollo to the Moon" set shortly after it first appeared on the products page of the SF website. And a long time passed with no info. But to be fair to Mark, he did send an update email out a couple of months ago with some tantalising snippets of info. I don't know how wide the net fell on that email, but he did let us know that we were not forgotten. Most of what he said in the email has now appeared on the blog that Robert mentioned above."Customer Service" may not be a SF strongpoint, but I for one am prepared to put up with that for the excellent products that make their way to the marketplace. |

I've always found customer service to be a strong point at Spacecraft Films, but if he is filming material for more sets, I believe I can wait a while. Sure, I wish he sent more update e-mails, but if there's nothing to say, why bother? That said, I can't wait until I get my hands on his Shuttle and Cape sets. |

All I can say is that the wait will be worth it. The new project is really cool. That's all I can say for now. |

Indeed, thanks Robert for pointing out that Blog...I can't wait to see their Unmanned Spacecraft films Which is the best Apollo 11 DVD to order? I have the J-missions DVDs but didn't buy the very first Apollo 11 DVD as they made a 2nd version. The one we're talking about (To the Moon) is yet another one? |

Which is the best? Difficult to answer, as they seem to be quite different. The set you refer to is the re-issue of "Apollo 11: Men on the Moon", which contains all the onboard film, all the TV broadcasts, and supplemental video, such as stacking and countdown. The main difference between the first issue and the reissue is that more or less everything has been rearranged into chronological order, and audio has been added to the silent segments of video. Plus, on the moonwalk itself, audio from the post mission debriefing has been added as a second audio track. The "Apollo to the Moon" set is a chronological record of the mission itself, presented (I believe) "as it happened", from launch to splashdown. My understanding is that ALL the audio from the mission, plus all TV broadcasts (including the walk) are in this new set. From the descriptions of this new set there appears to be plenty material that isn't on the "Men on the Moon" set. Mark has good description of this new set in his blog from November 6th 2007. |

Just yesterday I saw these new items at Spacecraft Films' website. Described as "In Replication - Begins shipping in September 2008" - Developing Project Apollo
This 1 DVD collection contains unique material surrounding the development of the Apollo Manned Lunar Landing Project. These rare programs provide a unique glimpse into the development of the program at Johnson Space Center in the mid 1960's. The programs tend to be project, operational and spacecraft specific. Running time approximately 3 hours. - Project Gemini Flight Controller Orientation
This 1 DVD unique collection of material features a series of films created as Gemini Flight Controller orientation programs. Although not complete (two reels that we know of are missing) the material offers a fascinating glimpse into Project Gemini. Also contains two other rare Gemini programs. Running time approximately 90 minutes. See website for more details. Both priced at $19.99.Something to look forward to. |

I try and keep a rather low profile so I can get my pending production done and complete work on something really amazing we're working on...but... alas... The two products we put on the site a few days ago are interesting collections of material we have run across recently that we felt deserved to be offered... I also placed a blog update on current production on our site. Stuff is happening! Mark |

I was just watching the Mission to the Moon set of period documentaries with my g/f (who it turns out is as big a space geek as me) and we really are loving them. A very fun set with some great background information and terrific footage. |

Glad you like it... We have been making some great progress recently and will have some more new stuff soon... including two new 1 DVD sets this month. The Cape is moving along as well... we put a short bit from some of the Pad 34 stuff from the Cape up a few days ago... And we're getting close to another announcement on something very nice real soon... |

Mark, have you decided to hold back the new Apollo 11 set for next year - the 40th anniversary, or is it still planned to release it this year? |

This is a complicated answer, especially since there are other parties and events impacting it that are not resolved, and outside of our control. The set is done except for one item: I want to include better EVA footage. It is likely that this may become a possibility, but I have to let it resolve itself. I know this is a bit cryptic, but it is the best I can do. We'll release the set just as soon as the EVA issue is resolved, one way or another. It is the only reason it is being held... not for the 40th anniversary. |

Too much more going on right now for me to name a date on Skylab. Several other items are either in replication or in final production, and while Skylab has been roughed out footage wise, all of the other pending items must be cleared before returning to it. |

I don't have a date yet. We are now out of all of the Apollo 15 stock from when Fox distributed the set, so it is changing packaging as well as masters. I would expect 15 to be back in stock at the beginning of the new year, especially as replication lead times tend to increase over the holidays and we have a number of items in the pipeline currently. |

There has been a great deal going on this year, all of it dealing with production. I just can't talk about it all until a few more things are resolved. There are also several items growing very close to release, and I think they will be regarded as some of our best releases ever. |

I am still working on better EVA footage, and there are things in the works on this but I can't talk about it.I don't want to release it and then have the better footage become available. The rest of the set is done and ready to go, but I would really like to include the best possible EVA footage. |

When I was at the ASF show at Kennedy Space Center a few weeks ago, the Space Shop gift store had a couple sets of Apollo 15. You could try contacting them -- I don't know if they ship though. |

Good idea, Mark, but they are out of stock now (Nov. 26) as well. I'll have to wait until Spacecraft Films makes some more. |

I can't help thinking that these cryptic comments mean one of two things: either SCF has had the Apollo 11 EVA TV footage digitally "cleaned" (using a process similar to the process which made the Apollo 16 EVA TV better than Apollo 15) or... they have found the missing Australian data tapes with higher-quality EVA footage. Don't keep us guessing too long, Mark! |

Mark, heaven knows you get enough questions regarding the films so forgive me if I add one of my own. With regard to the Moonlander set, do you have any rough indications on the release date together with the proposed number of DVDs? |

On the blog for Spacecraft Films is the following: As we have mentioned before, the Apollo 11 4 DVD set "To The Moon" is currently being held for release for improved EVA footage, which is in the works. Does anyone want to venture a guess as to what "in the works" entails? I know from Mark Gray's posts on this forum that it is a delicate and sensitive situation. However, I'm just curious as to what others think is meant by that description. Hopefully, it means that improved EVA footage has been found and is in the process of being digitized and not just that the improved footage is still being sought. |

I am going to request, formally as moderator, that we do not speculate. As Mark says the topic is sensitive, we should treat it as such and wait until he is ready to share. |

It appears that Spacecraft Films actually has now obtained better EVA footage for Apollo 11 from what they have listed on their new and improved website. Can't wait for this one. I hope it actually comes out in 2009. |

We are in final work on the Apollo 11 set that has been holding for improved EVA footage. That is all I will say at this time. The release will be coming up in the not too distant future. |
