Just picked up this set of 4 dvds this weekend. I used to watch this as a kid in the 60s, 1966 I think. Sure was fun and brought back some good memories. One of the episodes had the 2 time travelers (Tony + Doug) transported to a spaceship destined for Mars, but due to a need for refueling, landed on the moon. The dvds are well done and have great clarity and color.

The ol' Time Tunnel! Haven't seen it at all since I was kid. I was lucky enough to win a auction bid years ago of a nice 10 X 8 signed photo of Colbert, Meriwether and Darren sitting in front of that hypnotic tunnel. Can't wait to see it all again!

I'll be on the lookout for these DVDs. The Time Tunnel was one of my favorite Irwin Allen produced TV shows.

Yes! Those were some other good sci-fi shows. I did see Lost in Space on DVD. A flyer in the Time Tunnel set stated Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was also to be released.

I saw that episode on TV a few weeks ago (Encore Action Channel carries it on Saturday mornings). It was pretty bad. For a 1966 show you could compare it directly to the original Star Trek episode The Cage and see how superior Trek was. This episode of Time Tunnel used (if I remember correctly) an Atlas rocket in flight for their spaceship. Then it had the characters walking around on a phony moon set wearing bright spacesuits with bubble helmets that were obviously left over from a mid-1950s science fiction movie. And there was an explosion on the moon that had flames and smoke.

Clearly they had a budget of about $25.34. Horrid.

Hmmm, I think there were also one or two fiery space explosion scenes in a few 'Star Wars' movies...!

One should remember that Gene Roddenberry stood up to the network 'suits' more than Irwin Allen did. Allen was notorious for his 'minimal' sets. Remember how even on 'Lost In Space', away from the Jupiter II, the sets looked like the stage of a community theatre, with sometimes only a few stage props up front with total darkness behind? 'Lost In Space', 'Land of the Giants', 'Voyage...' etc. were all geared toward mostly kids, and it worked very well.
Many people don't know Allen actually won an Oscar for Best Documentary in the early 50's. He is also remembered as the 'Master of Disaster', producing the 70's, then blockbusters, 'The Poseidon Adventure' and 'The Towering Inferno'. Allen certainly knew what he was doing and knew what audiences wanted. Roddenberry had more of a personal vision to promote and really stuck to his guns. I think they both accomplished at least most of what they wanted. After all...we're still talking about them today!
Roddenberry reportedly watched 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country' just a few days before he died on October 24, 1991. Nine days later on November 2, Irwin Allen joined him.

I think thats part of the fun of watching them again. What was so realistic watching the series as a child, is so unreal as an adult. I have been watching the series with my 10 year old daughter and she loves it! She says she can't wait to see what happens next to "Doug and Tony"

Eh, to each his own, but to me they look crappy.

Now if you want a show that is bizarrely enjoyable even today, try "UFO." It was campy and that was part of its charm, but it also had some good stories as well. I wish somebody would update it and do it again, without the unintentional humor.
